Description
I now have 6 songs about people, family , that have died. I think I have an EP. This one is for my dad who died at 46, whenI was 15. A long time ago. At times I find reasons to try an figure out what happened, who he was and how it affected me. This is one of those times....

Lyrics
The old man stood naked in the rain and Im fourteen
when I pulled up at the bar in our Ford Fairlane.
He was singing "My Way,"
just like Frank Sinatra.
I took the road by the river, the long way home.

He took off his glasses
and he looked me in the eye.
He said, "Son, if I could tell you,
I would tell you that I tried.
I wish I would have been there
when you needed me most.
I'm not a father;
I'm a ghost.”

The earth spins faster than I can drive.
My father's house is on the other side.

He was the one who stuck around.
After the war
he stayed in town.
I watched him head to work in his father's old car.
Ate his burgers
Ate his burgers on white bread.
Finished school, loved his job and he did it well.
Turned the soil with his hands,
He built a goddamn swimming pool.

The earth spins faster than I can drive.
My father's house is on the other side.

So much water under the bridge but I drive slow
down that alley
every time I am in town.
There are no dogs barking and the pool is gone;
it rusted away a long time ago.

Just a hole in the ground
Just a hole in the ground.
The pool is gone, and no dogs barking.

The earth spins faster than I can drive.
My father's house is on the other side.

I could listen to and read your poetry for hours. Really love your writing; but you knew that. I listened to this one at least three times already.

Poignant
I was pulled in right from the start. If I had to put a word to your vocal I'd say tragically honest, meaning you capture way more than the words or the notes. Musically this is a good song and everything about the pace, the lyrics and the harmonies I really like. The mix is intimate and uncluttered so your story is the main point. Nice!! And thanks for the download.

Escaping the past
When you go poking around into the past .. you never know what ghosts are going to emerge.

Or maybe I should say, one of the best ways to exorcise those ghosts from the past is to capture them with a song.

Your evocative writing, singing and playing aptly cast a spell over erstwhile events. The past haunts the present. I love that line "The earth spins faster than I can drive." Among other interpretations, it suggests no matter how fast we try to distance ourselves .. we can't escape from the past. Good writing.

Been awhile...
Songs of personal loss always tend to work for me. This one is no exception. (At least you have clear memories of your dad. I envy you. Mine died when I was four...)

A lovely melancholy tune bro!

Be well!

No Dogs Barking
Another fine song, Tim. Really like the way you weave everyday sayings and happenings into an engaging, poetic story. The understated, sympathetic arrangement underscores your plaintive vocal. You are mining a rich musical vein with this song cycle. Impressive post. Thanks.

No Dogs Barking
I enjoyed this song - the mood that you create with the music track really fits the story you tell about your father. Not quite sad or melancholy, more like nostalgic and intrspective, but definitely there is hole in your heart that he once filled. Nice work - thanks for sharing -

you make simple lyrics....(even clichéd lyrics) poignant and meaningful because your vocal delivery pulls the listener in. the mix is stupendous - i'm listening on my bose bluetooth speaker.....it's wonderful.
there's much scope for some kind of major resolution that builds and diverts....but even though you don't go there it's still a great track. but i would add some diversion somewhere just to keep everything fresh.
gifted songwriter though....everything you create is very listenable.

Thanks Julian
I will take your advise. After your last email I went to check some of your work on youtube. I had no idea the depth and range of what you do. The father and son commercials, radio comedy. You have a talent for entertaining. you look great on camera. It gave me a better perspective to listen to the work you post here... I am 62 years old and I sometimes can be selfish with my words and praise of others. I always appreciate yours.
