Dancing In The Rain

Description
There is plenty of fertile ground for political songs at the moment, particularly in the US, but equally so in Australia and Europe.

Many of these songs tend to, by the very nature of the subject, be a bit doom and gloom.

This is a slightly different take on how we could respond.

Hemingway, Brecht, Plato and Reginald Rose, amongst others, somehow get entangled in the song :-)

Single “live” take recorded at the Front Parlour Room of Chez Pierre (a.k.a our front room...) with a Zoom H2 and mastered in Logic using Ozone 7 as a plugin. PRS Angelus guitar. No click-track, no auto-tune, no safety net :-)

There is possibly a properly arranged version in the pipeline but I thought I would post this au naturale. I like the coffee-shop feel it has.

See what you make of it.

Lyrics
Dancing In The Rain - Peter Bowen (March 2017) CAPO 2

[D] [A] [G] [A]

[D] The storm clouds of [A] history
[G] Steal out of the [A] night
[D] They cry early-[A]warning
[G] Of a drift to the [A] right
[G] For whom the bell [A] tolls?
[Bm] We’re all feeling the [C] strain
[D] I’d rather go [A] dancing in the [G] rain [D]

[D] All the king’s [A] horses
[G] And twelve angry [A] men
[D] Can’t put all the [A] false facts
[G] Together [A] again
[G] A threepenny [A] opera
[Bm] Is sung in re[C]frain
[D] I’d rather be [A] dancing in the [G] rain [D]

[Em7] Beggar-man, [A7] thief
[F#7] Can’t get no re[Bm]lief
[C] They fell by the [G] wayside
Throughout the [A] campaign
[Em7] The rich without [A7] wisdom,
[F#7] Drown in their cham[Bm]pagne
[C] Why don’t they try [G] dancing in the [A] rain?

[D] The ghost ship of [A] state
[G] Adrift in the [A] night
[D] Needs to chart a new [A] course
[G] Step into the [A] light
[G] It doesn’t [A] matter
[Bm] If it spoils their pa[C]rade
[D] Let’s all try [A] dancing in the [G] rain [D]

[Em7] No wall can [A7] divide us
[F#7] We’re all one and the [Bm] same
[C] Let’s all go [G] dancing in the [A] rain…

The very best
of all the political songs I've heard of late!

Bravissimo!

Not your standard love song...
Thanks, Mike. I had a simple chord progression I was working on and every time I got to the end phrase I'd sing "dancing in the rain" in my head. I tried to find another hook line but kept coming back to it so I went with it and then tried to find a theme for the song that wasn't the standard love song thing. I found a quote attributed to Vivian Greene, "Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass...It's about learning to dance in the rain" and I thought of the political storms that are enveloping the globe at the moment and the song went from there. Glad you liked it. The Great South Band is going to flesh this one out, too. Take care.

"in my head"
Sometime I find a song will more-or-less write itself if I can listen intently to my Muse!

I love the idea of doing something creative and meaningful during a political storm, rather than allowing oneself to get swept up and away by it. It's what makes this song so brilliant!

Once again: Bravissimo!

Be well friend!

Dancing in the Rain
Guitar sounds good. Clear vocal - sits well on top of the guitar, I think. Engaging lyrics - dancing in the rain seems a pleasant, carefree, Gene Kelly-in-love sort of image, which helps in these politically difficult times. It all works well!

Not too bad :-)
Thanks, Philip. Yes, the "dancing in the rain" bit is more a metaphor for not being too burdened by what is going on in the political arena these days. When we can still get a good coffee, drink nice red wine with friends and play great guitars, life can't be too bad! In reality, if I tried to dance in the rain I'd just slip over and hurt myself. :-) I will be very keen to hear where we go with this with the Great South Band. Talk soon, my friend. Take care.

Cool ............. but not wet
I'm imagining it with bass, drums, some keys and another guitar or two ;)

Nice one Peter.

dancing
with a great set of lyrics and solid melody.
In the old days we'd call this a great "demo"
Now I'm waiting for the fully arranged version

you
don't need no stinkin auto-tune anyway. Your voice is perfectly fine wo it...as shown here. The au naturel, live approach was just right, it makes the song organic as it should be.

In my head...
Thanks, Sam. You do say the nicest things :-) I like this "au naturale" as well. I do hear drums and bass kicking in in my head though... Take care.

be added and still remain organic.

Political games
Thanks, Dean. Thanks for the support. Plenty of interesting political games being played out in Australia, as well. The PRS is a seriously good guitar. I am very lucky to own it. Take care.

An interesting take
It's so difficult to find a way into everything that's going on at the moment and this manages a fresh insight.

Very nicely done.

Another
fine song for my collection Peter, a good song always sounds great with just an acoustic guitar and vocals so I'm looking forward to the bigger production with more instruments.
Lovely song with great lyrics, very much enjoyed.

A chance...
Thanks, Bob. Yes, I agree. If you start with a song that works solo/acoustic then at least it has a chance of being scaled up to something bigger, and hopefully, better. Glad you liked the coffee shop approach, too. Take care.

Thanks, Maurice. I appreciate your very kind words. I must admit I was pretty happy with how this song turned out. The Great South Band (jiguma, Phil18 and I :-)) are working up an arranged version, too. Should be fun. Take care.

Early morning reign :-)
Thanks, Vic. Chez Pierre is good to record in about 5 am - before cars start to drive past and get picked up on the condenser mics! I have finally reconciled myself to recording acoustic guitar parts early in the morning. Funnily enough, I tend to play pretty well at that time, so it works. Glad you liked my attempt to lighten the frustration. Take care.

Well written
You really have a wonderful way with words with your guitar and you sing it so well! It does have a nice small room warmth to it. I can imagine if you did a plug in version of this it would really be cool too!

Daugie Award Winner
For the many years now I give Daugie Awards on my MJ page for the finer examples of online advocacy. My friend you got this years award winner right here.
This is a wonderful song, and not because I find the lyric comfortable, I do but that's not criteria for the award, great playing and singing are a given on your material, this one seems righteous. Like what you believe in your heart what is on the track, and a lucid view point to boot... winner!

La La Land?
Thanks, Daug. Sure the award wasn't really intended for La La Land :-) I appreciate your comments about the song and the performance. I was pretty happy with how it ended up. Lucid and righteous will do just fine. Take care.

dancing in the rain
yeah, these are strange times, today we had elections in the netherlands and the populists and eurosceptics luckily didn't win. I could write several songs about the politics of this moment but I prefer to sit in the springsun :-)
Music is a great vehicle for statements about the human situation though ánd a way to escape it all :-)
Enjoyed this song, well performed and recorded.
good one!

Hard to ignore...
Thanks, Mike. I did try and make the song generic, as we are experiencing the same mass disenchantment with politics in Australia, but Donald does keep offering up moments of incredulity that are hard to ignore. :-) Take care.

I think this has a good amount of room sound
I think it is the vocal mostly which sounds a bit distant in the mix, meaning it is being picked up by a room mic? I think it would have helped if the vocal were slightly closer to the mic? Nicely played and sung as usual! I also feel like this would benefit from percussive accompanyment. Love it!

Plonked :-)
Thanks, Freddy. Glad you liked the song. I used a H2 Zoom to record this. I just plonked it on the bench at a height closer to my mouth than the guitar and pressed record and sang. I was probably about 2 feet away from it. That's why you are getting the room as well. It was just meant to be a quick, live, coffeeshop demo of the song. The Great South Band (Neil, Philip and I) are now working up the "proper" version :-) It will hopefully polish up alright with a band arrangement. Take care. Hope you are well.

Dancing
A really lovely positive song Peter in response to the times we live in. My apologies for being rather late to the thread here!! Like the fresh feel of the live demo, I enjoy doing them myself and often play around with a song for ages in this format before getting down to recording a fuller version.yes this is a real good one.
