Description
I know it's not long since I posted two other songs but I have another song that could be irrelevant in a few weeks so I'm posting it now.

Some of you may have seen some of our more demented politicians advocating going to war with Spain over Gibraltar.

Since the vote to take us out of the EU I've woken most nights wondering "how did that happen and what's going to happen now?" A few nights ago I woke up with a song almost fully formed in my head. When I got up in the morning it was still there so I recorded it as quickly as I could. No re-recording, no rewriting, no real mixing. I guess it took an hour or so. I've never done that before and probably won't again. Hopefully the song will will never become reality.

For those who don't know European history, 1585 was the date of another Anglo-Spanish war. The countries mentioned are the smallest in Europe (except Spain, France and Germany of course)

War with Spain © Dick Langford 2017

I hear we're going to war with Spain
It's 1585 again
And while we're there we'd take the chance
And cross the border into France
We're having so much fun you see
next on the list is Germany

Hang on though Spain isn't small
We need a place more suitable
I've had a think and now's the time
For declaring war on Lichtenstein
Luxembourg we could attack
We'll soon get our Empire back

Here we go, here we go, here we go
Andorra's next then Monaco
And if that goes well and all is grand
We'll march right into Switzerland
Is this not what you voted for?
Did you not want another war?

Smiles and disbelief...
Serious smiles here Dick, even though I am shaking my head in disbelief at the same time. Rue Britannia... The retro vibe suits the sentiment of the song perfectly. Musical influences abound. Compulsory listening in Great Yarmouth :-) Brilliant.

Rue Britannia!
Love it :-)

Yes Peter disbelief is something I'm learning to live with.

Thanks for the listen and comments. Great Yarmouth soon to be Lesser Yarmouth.

War With Spain
I like the "Not Fade Away" vibe to this. I'd like to be alive in 50 years and look back on these political times and see if there's any sensible explanation for some of the demented ideas. Anyway, perhaps Michael
Fallon could take over Australia again after he's sorted out all those countries? Entertaining, Dick.
DWL said 43 days ago (April 11th, 2017)
It was a Capella
In my head. A sort of doo-wop but when I started to record it turned out I was channeling Bo Diddley.

I certainly won't see 50 years but maybe 10 years will be enough to show the madness.

Thanks Philip!

Alright!
The topic is certainly disturbing, and its brutish stupidity needs to be underscored... but what a great way to do it Dick! The tune is to die for... fab stuff!

Be well bro!

WHAT THE HELL....
isn't it time to declare war on The Dutch?
And what about colonising Australia again?
But if we're going to slide into hell let's do it with great music..this one is a beauty.

War
what is it good for?.....sod all except perhaps providing source material for a great song. This is a corker Dick....right at the end I think you were channelling John Lennon in angry mode!!!....I wanted to hear more. Cheers Mark

Thanks Mark

If I hadn't been in "just get this down" mode I might have added San Marino (and Holland) to the list.

I didn't even write those last lines down they just appeared as I was doing the vocals. It's never happened before and probably won't again. I like the John Lennon comment. Bo Diddley and John Lennon will do me.

I wonder what I would write about if there wasn't so much shit.....

Thanks for the listen and comments!

Do you want another war?
Naw. We want more national socialism. Until government runs out of other peoples money dat is...
Dat rhythm could launch a thousand ships, opps it did. That's the Bo Diddley beat I think! Keep up the great work, your ability to create clean and powerful tunes with huge production values is inspiring. Love the guitar work in this one here.

Winning the war
Shades of Johnny Otis!

With a dash of Sir Francis Drake.

Some songs need to be recorded like this - just knock it out when the idea is fresh and the fingers are flying over the fretboard .. and that will be more than enough to carry the, ah, battle.

Sad but (possibly) true :(
One day we'll make (Great) Britain Great again. I am no longer a dual nationality Brit/Australian - it's all become too much for me.
As always, love your (Great) work Dick.

Sad indeed :-(
At the moment I can't see Britain ever being Great again. A divided country has been created and no mater how Teresa May spins a "we're all working together" mantra is simply isn't going to happen.

Thanks for the listen and comments from the other side of the world Neil.

War with common sense
Brilliant work Dick. I was thinking Billy Bragg on vocals, Bo Didley on rhythm guitar and Eddie Van Halen doing the solo. Who would have thought war could be so entertaining?

War
I hope the suggestion of war with Spain is not serious? Europe's been without war for a remarkable time.

Hm.... It took me several lines before deciding that this was not based on the Hand Jive melody & chords, but it comes close in places. Good song though.

Bluster
But dangerous bluster. Yes, one of our politicians did suggest it could be an outcome of leaving the EU.

I thought Willy and the Hand Jive too. I came up with the song in the middle of the night and heard it as acapella. It wasn't until I started to actually sing it I realised where I might have picked up the melody!

Thanks for the listen and comments Vic.

War Is Fun! Grab That Gun!
'Cause It's Been So Long Since We've Had A Good One, Boys!

In my more pessimistic moments I sometimes wonder if the current raft of what passes for political 'leaders' (and their rafts of supporters) have any interest in actually not unleashing an utter shitstorm nobody will be able to stop. And for the stupidest, most short-sighted reasons someone could slap on a bumper sticker on their forehead for. Or maybe they think they can play as close to the edge as they want - even lean over the line - without the real thing happening.

As a Canadian living in Trump's America, I've watched this strange itch pass from the shadows into the edge of the light. 'Make America Great Again'... what the &%$# does that actually mean? It seems to me that too many people simply have never been touched by something like real war, and are itching for something along its lines to bring something back that they can't even define... or something. They just don't know how close the real fire is and why they should even avoid it.

I love the straight-off vibe of this; the sense of something needs to be said and said *right now*, no waiting for anything. Walk up to the mic, play the song and walk away. It underscores the urgency and frustration.

The last two lines - and the abrupt ending - are pure as the moment of realizing it's too late. Brilliant indeed.

Rock 'n' Roll...
...right into the grave. Wow! The topic is so right on the money. Your music is so lively, almost like the whole thing is so much fun (going to war, that is)...which it is not. So the contrast of music/performance v. the subject matter really carries a dramatic punch. You've really "let go" with your vocal here, Dick. Don't think I've heard this particular side of your singing before. I love it.
