Lethe (Song Of Er)

Description
Back in 2007 I tried my hand at progressive rock. I eventually churned out four or five tunes in this genre. My favorite piece of the lot was/is a song-suite called: LETHE (THE SONG OF ER). The concept is an attempt at contemporizing one of the more esoteric myths of Plato (Republic X, 614bff.). A second influence is similar imagery from ancient Orphic/Bacchic gold plates (found in tombs all over Greece).

The original mix was flat, tinny, and kinda blurry. So in 2011 I began remixing it on my old Power Mac G5. I got as far as a preliminary remix---I even produced an aiff of it---and then my computer crashed and burned.

Well, I never got rid of that old Mac, and just for a lark I would periodically try firing it up again... but to no avail. Recently I tried again, and to my great surprise and delight, it started up! I quickly began to recover what photos and music files I could before it went down again. (Which it did about 40 minutes later. I haven't been able to restart it since... DOH!)

Among the lost treasures I recovered was the above mentioned aiff file of LETHE! I loaded it onto my new Mac and remastered it in Logic Pro X.

While it still falls short of the remix I had in mind, it does sound WAY better than the original! I hope one day to be able to retrieve the entirety of the original project and do that final remix. In the meantime, this preliminary one will have to suffice.

My love of bands like Jethro Tull, the Moody Blues, and early Genesis is evident herein. Hope you enjoy it!

:-)

Prog FTW!
Man, your tracks sound so pro. Love this track, totally Yes and Genesis vibes. Especially like the synth use during the solo that starts at 4:00.

Thanks C.H.
Glad you like the synth. It's not what I hoped for. In the original mix, it had a slight echo which I really dug. Somehow lost that in this remix. Otherwise, apart from some sound balancing, I'm pretty happy with this resultant mix.

Wow
Sounds great Micheal, what a rocker. Nice changes through out and those drums compliment well. I've always enjoyed your guitar work and this song really shows your progressive side. I know you must have worked a lot on this and the results came through.

Thanks Vic...
Been working on four (count 'em...FOUR!) new tunes, but the going is slow. However, it's a good opportunity to give older tracks a much needed face-lift and get them re-posted. I was a fool to take all my tracks down when I left after my old Mac crashed. Oh well... maybe it's all for the best.

I appreciate your kind words as always.

Be well bro!

Plenty going on here - big sound! Would be interesting to hear it live - I can see swirling lights and a big screen with spacey images on it! Much enjoyed!

I too would
like to hear this live! But I'd need a band... and I've never had the opportunity to be in one. Chose to work hard and raise a family instead. Thank the gods for Logic and Garage Band. Now I'm able to have my cake and eat it too!

Glad you enjoyed the tune Philip.

Thank you Mr. Langford!
An oldie but goodie! (IMHO) Not you of course... the song! :-)

"Stops, starts, epic textures and a lot going on." That is, indeed, the "fun" of prog rock!

Glad you enjoyed it bro!

Be well!

I was indeed relieved!
I was able to recover over 200 "lost" pictures of a blessed reunion with old friends from my High School days, as well as several interesting music files (some of which may eventually turn up here in one form or another).

Many thanks for the kind words Stan!

Hi'ya KC!
I've long been a prog-rock fan. They're a hell of a lot of work to put together though! That's why I haven't done many of them. For me, as the work load increases the fun decreases; and let's face it... I do this primarily for the fun!

Glad you enjoyed it man!

This is really well done - brings to mind a plethora of great prog rock bands. Your movements flow seamlessly from one into the next - each one unique yet fits into the whole production just as it should. Lots of ear candy effects to make it even more interesting. One of your best - great effort - thanks for bringing it to my attention - really enjoyed, my friend!

Thanks...
for the words of encouragement Sig. You're so much better at this genre than I am, and I highly respect your viewpoint.

Someday---when my confidence has fully returned and I find myself in the zone---I may attempt something like this once again.
