Lyrics
I GREW UP WITH NO RULES
WAS HOME BEFORE DINNER
I DON'T REMEMBER ANYTHING WE SAID
OR ANYTHING WE EAT
I FOLLOW YOUR FOOTSTEPS
FROM PREVIOUS DAYS
I REMEMBERED YOUR BIRTHDAY
I REMEMBER YOUR WAYS
I WAS JUST A KID
AND IT WAS JUST A DREAM
TO FIND A WAY ACROSS THE RIVER

THE FOG HAS LIFTED
THE LANDSCAPE SHINES
THE ROAD GOES ON FOREVER
IN A DRIFTERS MIND

FALL ASLEEP MY LOVE
MY EYES WILL STAY OPEN
FOR THE THINGS THAT LAST FOREVER
AND THE TRACKS AHEAD
I SING OF SORROW
AND A BIG OPEN SKY
I MADE IT MY OWN
GOD DAMN IT I TRIED

THE FOG HAS LIFTED
THE LANDSCAPE SHINES
THE ROAD GOES ON FOREVER
IN A DRIFTERS MIND

A MAN IN A SUIT
FROM A WORKING CLASS HOME
USED TO MAKE YOU BELIEVE
YOU COULD DO IT ON YOUR OWN

A CUP OF COFFEE
THE SUN WILL RISE AGAIN
NOTHING LASTS FOREVER
IT WORKS OUT IN THE END

THE FOG HAS LIFTED
THE LANDSCAPE SHINES
THE ROAD GOES ON FOREVER
IN A DRIFTERS MIND

No rules
Loved it. Your vocal was so right with the lyrics. The emotion, force and passion was great. Instruments were well played and right in place. I especially liked the understated guitar. Well done!

fog
you often visit well-worn progressions but always manage to pull some uniqueness out of the bag. no exception here, although for me at least, it's too entrenched in that sandy musical desert that much of america loves to churn out and echo back.

the individuality is in your vocal delivery and everything hangs neatly around it...even those intentional, slightly off-the-beat strums that come in soon after the intro. speaking of which, i liked that a lot....but it doesn't really connect to the rest in any meaningful way.

it's interesting listening to stuff here and imagining the face behind the avatar. in this one you sound like some old rocker who drank far too much jack daniels and has string tied to his long hair.

superb mix as ever.....and you even pull off the little ad-libs with consummate professional ease.

i'm in the US july 3 - aug 30.....let me know if you'd like to meet.

You
sound like some guy who hung with Willie Nelson way back when. Down homey or something like that. It could have been in the soundtrack for Oh Brother, Wherefore Art Thou, if I remember the name of that movie correctly. Thank you for putting your heart into this.

The fog has lifted
Warm and expressive vocal - sort of Guy Clark meets John Prine. Thoughtful lyrics. Effective backing. Entertaining!

Hey bro!
This is a fine piece of reflective writing. I'm a sucker for this sort of thing. (I'm a big John Hiatt fan and this puts me in mind of some of his folkier stuff...) Well recorded. I do enjoy your singing here. Cool harmonies! Very honest, threadbare, and heart-felt.

The judicious use of electric guitar and organ fits like a glove.

Two thumbs up!

Be well friend!

love the melody
cool the way the intro builds into the progression. The vocals fit well within the mix. Lyrics hit right home even though some of us still wait for the fog to lift. Like it says "it works out in the end" (one way or another). thanks for sharing.

I can see clearly now
I was trying to clarify the genre and I decided it should be called Country-Midwestern.

I like how you continue to mine the past for its influence on the present. When you say "The road goes on forever/in a drifter's mind" I know you are speaking from experience. As we age and become rooted those ancient nomadic adventures need to remain a part of our sensibilities - they need to be a part of who we are - even if we never would want to go through the experience again.

It's not easy to put these perceptions into song, but the effort reaps some rewards or perhaps helps to clarify certain aspects of life - both past and present - and sometimes the fog actually lifts.
