Description
BiiK is the result of a collaboration with Peter Reid (PBGB drummer) and myself, based on an idea of Pete's, which we worked on for maybe 2 months.
Pete played the drums into midi and set up the structure so we both knew what needed to be done and when. I followed Pete's ideas in developing the bass, guitar and keyboard tracks and put everything together, following Pete's directions. Occasionally I snuck in some ideas too. I played in the bass, electric guitar and keyboard parts on my E-Keys 49 keyboard. The acoustic guitar is the only other instrument that was used.
We developed a set of drum, guitar, bass and keyboard loops for use throughout the song, and then built the song up bar by bar, section by section until we came to the song known as "BiiK".
Why is it "Surf Music"? Because Pete is an addicted surfer, and we both live within a couple of hundred metres of the beach. Oh, and because I couldn't actually categorise it.
There is space here to add some soloing if anyone feels they're up to it.
Anyway, for me, it was a very interesting experience to step waaaaaay outside my comfort zone and take instructions about what was required - Pete thought all of this up, but as he doesn't play a melodic instrument, I could only guess what he wanted from hummed parts or "drummeresque" descriptions of what he was thinking. I enjoyed it a lot, and look forward to doing more.

Really interesting post, Neil. Sounds great. Definitely room for some ringing electric guitar chords and a solo from Dave Gilmour :-) Insistent and catchy. Nice one.

Too cool, Neil
Almost prog rock rather than surf but what the heck? Quite different from your usual offering (no politics, no distinctive vocal) but I think it's good on many levels to shake things up a bit and help stimulate the synapses. Tell Pete we like it ;-)

Collab
Must be interesting working with a drummer. Given the drummer, I was actually expecting for the drum to go wilder than it does.

Cool Groove!

It does have a proggy feel...
...and sounds nothing like anything I've heard you do before...there are nods to Tull, Yes, and Rush...I can certainly hear the drummeristical thinking...

It's musical all through and never pointlessly dissonant, and it's rhythmically interesting....

I eagerly await the vocals, the flute solos, and the lead guitar solo...

And the Mellotron. Because Prog.

Interesting
Although I think it needs something more melodic over the top in several places, I admire what you've done here, Neil.
