Description
My 11-year-old grandson took up the viola last Oct. and has fallen in love with the instrument. He's making good progress. Part of our summer project is to play some duets together and for me to teach him how to begin writing some of his own music. JUNE 13 appeared yesterday over a cup of coffee and breakfast with my wife. (Those restaurant napkins are very useful in such circumstances!) I hope you will enjoy the first of my little experiments for beginning string players. (The viola on the recording is, of course, digital, but my grandson already is developing a feeling for the rich tones with which this instrument sings.) Short: 2:25. Hope you will enjoy.

If you are interested in seeing the score, you can find it here on my website:

Aching with yearning.
A strange yearning for something undeclared seems to permeate this, at least when I listen to it. Very subtle.

Beautiful reflective tone from the viola. I can hear this piece in a movie where the characters are reflecting on something, or as the gentle aftermath of some event. Lovely.

The young
gentleman has good taste! I love the sound of violas far more than violins, though both can be expressive. It's that mid-rangy fullness, I think. Though this was enjoyable, I'll be looking forward to the real duet with grandson. That will be a treat.

Nice one Paul
I have to say, I'm somewhat partial to the viola and cello. My 14 year old will be playing the viola in Symphony starting as a freshman in high school this Fall. My second daughter played the cello when she went to school. Something about the sound of those two instruments that sound subtle compared to the rest of the strings. I'm sure you're ecstatic about your grandson and looking forward to hearing a collab. Your new comp is short but sweet. Thanks for sharing.

Teachable moment
I'm having a hard time imagining an 11-year-old wanting to play this languid piece. However, as he has already committed to playing the viola, the kid must be exceptional : )

When I was in 5th grade...
I was handed a viola and expected to play. I didn't take to the viola and would have preferred a cello but maybe if I had this lovely tune to practice with that would have been a different story.
A sweet and mellow work Paul. Your grandson is lucky to have someone to take such and interest in his music development.

Your grandson has a wonderful mentor to guide him along the path, Paul. Mellow and sentimental, but not in any way cloying. Lovely. Best wishes to you both.

I think 'rich' is the right word...
The tone and the melodic line of the viola is full and emotional, and I love the way that it twines around and 'talks to' the piano line...
