Metaphoric Bullet

Description
My latest about the idiotic decision to leave the EU. A decision driven by a mixture of ignorance, lies and fear.

Written with long time collaborator Richard Marris.

All the reasons people in the song gave for leaving have either been said to me or were picked up from the internet. See the link below.

On a technical note I had a riff I was playing around with that fitted with the song and out of interest I tried the transpose function in Logic to change the chord. Not perfect but I liked the effect so left it in. All the other guitars and bass were done "properly" ;-)

Reasons to Leave

Metaphoric Bullet © Langford/Marris 2017

He thought he knew what he was doing well at least that's what he said
put a metaphoric bullet in his best friend's head
Drop the gun, avoid the bloodstain on the floor

He said it's just a stupid piece of paper and nothing's gonna change
Some thought it was their saviour but that just sounds deranged
He said you'll thank me in the future that's what friends are for

It's brother against brother, Mother against son
Father against daughter and the damage has been done
Sisters aren't together and friends no longer friends
Will there be reconciliation and where's it going to end?

He said he'd done his research and there were reasons not to stay
The country was full up now and the Queen wanted away
Banning bent bananas, it's nonsense don't you know

He blamed all the immigrants and said they're running scams
We'd go back to using ounces instead of bloody grammes
He saw it on the tele he said thats the way to go

There's a bullet for your mother and one more for your dad
One for all the friends you've got and those you never had
A bullet for the union and one more for the poor
and none left for the government but isn't that what this was for

He said project fear was rubbish, he'd read it in the Mail
Remember we are British and Britain never fails
He's incandescent about light bulbs and what he thinks he's lost

We won't be classifying cabbages, obeying foreign laws
We can go back to the 50s to the way we were before
It's all we've ever wanted just don't ask about the cost

It's brother against brother, Mother against son
Father against daughter and the damage has been done
Sisters aren't together and friends no longer friends
Will there be reconciliation and where's it going to end?

Powerful lyrics. I love the beat that sits underneath this, and also the flashes of guitar that punctuate the lyrics. Sung with conviction. Excellent work, Dick. But it seems you're stuck with Brexit?

Stuck?
Very likely although the way the negotiations are going the whole thing could just fall apart. Many of us are still stunned by what is happening and reading the reasons people gave for leaving almost makes me want to give on humanity.

Thanks for the comments Philip.

You ROCK Dick!
In more ways than one brother...

Insightful lyrics over an infectious rhythm.

Simply excellent!

Be well friend!

Sung with plenty of conviction Dick. I have always loved your angry songs. And you have done a nice production job too. Thanks for posting it.

You are so
at ease, singing such protest songs or songs that express discontent. Love your voice and your writing. Everything you do is of the highest quality. You are a gem. Thanks.

Classic riffage and guitar tones, Dick. Lyrical gems abound, too. That second "chorus" arrangement is killer stuff. Fine song. Post contemporary grunge :-) Thanks.

Seems there's stupidity to go around at the moment Dick!
Brexit has disappeared from the radar here now that we have the US nightmare to worry about, but I'm sure there must be a lot of anguish over there about this stupid decision. For a while I thought we had the monopoly on idiotic leaders, but it seems like the UK and the US are catching up :(
Love the song - the words are excellent, with just the right amount of a hint that somewhere in the UK, rifle cabinets are being unlocked.
Cheers from Oz,

More than enough stupidity
I think all our nations appear to be on a race to the bottom.

Thanks for the listen and comments. Metaphoric rifles are being cocked as we speak.... .

Cool political song.
I was amazed to see that the guys who were responsible for this referendum were the first ones who left politics, leaving the folks with the mess..
I'm afraid this brexit will turn out a disaster for both Britain and the EU. The Dutch always had tight bonds with the English and we will suffer from it too. Good luck!
I dig this song, and I think that there aren't enough political songs around here and in general

Yes, rats and sinking ship spring to mind
The damage has been done now unfortunately and whatever happens now we're damaged goods.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Cees. There will be more political songs from me as this has got me more angry that I've ever been...

First
comment I've made here for a while! You know my feelings about Brexit well, so no need to say anything there.

Great protest song, powerful and pertinent, for those fully in the know anyway. Great playing and super-duper production too. Sounds fantastic blasting from my Rokits. Good stuff Dick.

The only good thing to come out of Brexit for me is that it's kickstarted my writing again but in many ways I'd rather just be plodding along as I was before!

Thanks for the comments. It was a different way of working this time using transpose to change chords on the riff!

Back to the 50s
Meaning the age when they were children and had their daddy shield them from the world. It's so transparent to everyone but them.

Good song.

Great lyrics
Great tune. All you can do is sit back and try to laugh. In the US there have been a number of satirical comedy news shows that have soared on the wings of Trump. I'm sure the same is true in the UK. You really captured the spirit.

I cry more than laugh
these days Steve.

There are plenty of satirical shows here and although they are very entertaining and funny it's depressing they are needed.

Thanks for stopping by.

here in the states too Dick.
It's difficult to accept but as long as we have intelligent passion as expressed here in your song, there's hope.

Powerful!
You always nail, the political landscape with insight and intelligence, angry and mournful at stupidity all at the same time. Couple your lyrics and delivery with music that powers the message along and you've got another well-produced and politically-clarifying song. (Make it all stop!!!) sorry I'm a bit late here, but glad I caught this.

Great song Dik and apologies for being late getting here....been far too drawn away by work of late. Brexit is bloody awful but in an anxious way I hope it's all we have to be concerned about and not that twat in North Korea starting WWIII

Yes, it's a crock of poo without a doubt.

The damage has already been done whatever happens now.

And you're right about WWIII - I thought we'd consigned those thoughts to history...
