Take My Hand

Description
This started out as a hiking song with my kids (see original version). It kept wanting to get bigger, and now the piece is a full-fledged gospel march. I think if you compare this song to the original (http://www.macjams.com/song/song_profile.php?lid=6326), you'll see that it is all grown up.

Listen, and leave the world behind!

Lyrics
TAKE MY HAND

Take my hand
Move on up the mountain
Don't look back
At the world we left behind
Don't you know
This path is full of changes
Take my hand
Take my hand
Walk with me

Feet in the dust
One step at a time
Higher and higher
The air is so fine
If you need a rest
We can stop by the stream
We can drink moving water
And dream.

(Chorus)
Take my hand, take my hand
Take my hand, take my hand.
Take my hand, take my hand
Take my hand, walk with me.

Put your hands in the dirt
Deep and black, deep and black
Put your hands in the dirt
Deep and black, deep and black
It's where we live (deep and black)
It's where we live (deep and black)
It's where we live (deep and black)
You and me
Deep and black
You and me.

(Repeat 1st verse, Chorus, ad lib out)

This makes me happy
The mood of this tune makes me really happy!

This tune feels to me really honest. I can't hear you trying
to hide or pretend anything, (that would hardly be
possible with this a simple and naked arrangement).

The recording is clean. The sound of your voice is very
real and near me the listner. That adds so a sens of
tangible presense.

Alltogether listening to it makes my really happy inside,
thats the best way I can describe. (high high ratings from
me)!

Can this song leave anyone unaffected?

Clear as a bell!
Nice, simple, and I love your voice! I can easily conjure visions of marching and singing this until reaching a crest over looking deep valleys. COOL

Good Changes
I like the marching format matched with gospel. Very
innovative. Sort of like Roy Orbison meets Mahalia
Jackson.

NIce and pure
First of all I was completely taken by the song art. What a
great image!

Really enjoyed this a lot. While I didn't particularly agree
with the light synth sounds earlier in the song I loved the
organ bit toward the end. Excellent recording- crystal
clear and excellent use of your range to convey the
emotion of the song.

NIce and pure
Thanks Adam. I went back and forth on the synth, too. Originally this was an
a capella piece. I wanted to do just piano and voice, but with a song this long
(4:30) I decided it needed some variation, so the percussion, synth and organ
were added. Of the three, I think the synth remains possibly out of place.

Wow, that's great
I love the new direction you took with this. It builds into
such inspiring emtion. Fantastic singing. I didn't care so
much for the synth part; it seemed out of place. THe
organ was great when it started to pick up. Fantastic.
The piano sounded a little too hard; maybe a little less
velocity in parts would be better and perhaps an
occasional use of peddal on an upbeat at the end of the
measures going into the chord change to give it a little
swing.

Maybe a little brush drums in the parts where it picks up;
a little New Orleans jazz funeral.

This is so great, Tom. Wow, you really can sing.

That's a great photo, too.

Wow, that's great
Thanks Peter. The photo is from ChildSpirit, a California organization that
holds an annual conference on children and spirituality.

That's two votes against the synth in the middle. I may have to reconsider it.
Thanks again for listening.

Refreshing... and so good
Your voice is so friendly, so clear and grounded, so light
yet wise - without being at all pedantic or preachy. Simply
true to yourself. "Refreshing" I think that is the best word
for it, for me, your voice makes me feel so refreshed. I am
so glad you let your voice drive your tracks. The addition
of organ and other elements is perfectly placed to create a
very successful emotional uplift. Your voice seems
strained, range-wise, on a couple notes toward the end,
maybe you could sing just a few phrases over again before
releasing the CD. But other than that, a terrific track. More
great writing, arranging and an absolutely honest
performance.

Refreshing... and so good
Thanks Tobin. I appreciate your support, and your comments about the
vocals in this piece. 'Strained' is a good way to describe the fervent lead
toward the end. I feel like I am asking my voice to do more than it is capable
of. So I just give it my best shot (shots--there were many takes of that last
section), and hope that passion is good enough. But sometimes, I wish I had
another voice.

As for that CD? If I ever make one, you will get the 1st copy. Thanks again.

Very engaging
Unchanging piano chord hits need a little more variation
to satisfy my ear. Perhaps some chord inversions or
octave-higher doubling. Perhaps a little arpeggio
(tinkling) here and there. Other than that, splendid song.
Love your vocal rise at the end!

Awww
Ok. So I read that this started out as 'a hiking song with your kids,' and
then it just went from there to moving me to tears by the end.
I love this song for the many 'layers' it has--the wonderful meaning in
the words, not to mention the singing, the playing, well....just all of it.

Thank you for sharing this gift.
