Bio:
When I was 12 years old, I had a nutty notion that I wanted to play an instrument. At first, I wanted to play the drums. That went over like a lead balloon, so I told my parents I wanted to take up the guitar. Thinking this was just a passing fad, mom and dad reluctantly agreed and bought me my first guitar...a $25 refurbished Teisco Del Ray guitar. Seeing that I was enjoying it and sticking to it, my father got me enrolled guitar classes almost immediately.
Sitting in and eventually becoming part of a band in 1980, I felt out of place and very self conscious as the rest of the musicians were well into high school and more accomplished at their music...but it worked. I studied, learned and picked up chord progressions and developed a somewhat keen ear for melodies. To my parents amazement, I kept with it. Once in high school, I maintained my guitar studies while honing my talents in visual arts, eventually graduating in the top 20 of my senior class in 1986. My guitar studies finished just prior to leaving for college in August of 1986.
Three years later, in my junior year of college, 2 friends and I started a band called “Red Over Green,” and composed a half a dozen songs. After completing my Bachelor of Arts degree in 1990, I packed up and moved to California, where I started my career as a graphic designer/artist. The next decade and a half saw me focus all my attention on design, living in Chicago, then finally planting myself in Columbus, Ohio, and using music as an outlet of expression and to calm the spirit and quiet the demons.
In 2007, I had a point of clarity and decided to start composing again after an 18 year hiatus. So with pen and paper (or computer, MIDI synth and guitar, in this case), and the help of a friend, Lefty She Swills was born.
Influenced by SHOES, Spider, the Sweet, Jefferson Airplane/Starship, Monkees, REM, Byrds, the Cars, ELO, Blondie, YES, Billy Squier...little did my parents know that keeping me out of trouble would cost them money!
"everybody here can be in the band..." - Paul Kantner "Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra," 1983
