RIP Leon Russell

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Leon Russell died in his sleep last night at age 74. He was still recovering from heart bypass surgery this past July. R.I.P., Leon.

Fully a master of time and space, just go and absorb... It's Tulsa, LA and Hank... all rolled into one all the time... Allow me to recommend Hank Wilson records... the original Hank only alive on record... No one will take Leon's place..

So many from the Golden Age of Rock are leaving us.

I saw Leon back in late 1970 opening up for Jethro Tull. (Sugarloaf also performed that evening.) Leon was way better live than in the studio.

You will be missed brother.

Leon Russell was one of the reasons I played piano as a teenager.

I saw him a few years ago, just after his collaboration with Elton John tour ended. He shuffled on stage using a walker, took a while to settle in his chair in front of the piano, then proceeded to blow us all away. Almost every song he performed had better arrangements than then originals. His playing was fantastic. No histrionics, no wasted movements, just perfection. A true inspiration.
