Never Knew

Get Flash to see this player.

This song, "Never Knew", is from a band I was in known as Separate Ways out of the San Francisco bay area. I sang/wrote/played lead guitar/produced etc. Joe Markert (Lead Vocals) & I were the main songwriters. "Never Knew" was written by Joe and myself. Joe wrote the lyrics and I wote the music. Andrew Alva played drums and Ralph Holmes played bass. We were overly blessed to have talented friends in the business and were able to con them into playing on our CD. "Never Knew" features Charlie Gillingham, from the Counting Crows, on hammond B-3. He is a really tasty player, I think you will agree. We had a blast making the CD, although shortly after we completed the record the engineer we were working with divorced his wife and decided to become a woman! What does that say about the experience he had with us? Hmmm. Anywho, we had a great time playing live. Unfortunately, as with most bands, the fragility of the band dynamic collapsed and we broke up shortly after this CD was recorded.

Anyway, please enjoy this cut and let me know what you think!

Thanks again!

P.S. If we were to get interest I am positive we would reform and maybe reach the potential I know we could have achieved. Peace.

Thanks man! We really missed our time I think. I'm glad I have a forum to get the music out there once again.

Good old Claudia/Susan?Ķ
?Ķ but that's another story entirely. This sounds so
much like Live, Counting Crows, and that whole
1990s post-grunge alternative sound that was sooo
popular in them there days. I loved it and so not
surprisingly I have a certain soft spot for this. The
production/performance sounds great, though my
speakers are hardly the best. It's a good sound and
works well in its genre. But I'm not overwhelmed by
the songwriting?Ķ it lacks a certain something, to
these ears. It's not bad just lacks that hook that I'm
listening out for, to single it out from all the other
songs in its genre. It's good rather than great
songwriting, if you know what I mean. Plus, the
familiarity of the sound is a little offputting?Ķ it's safe
and cosy but perhaps too safe and cosy, except
towards the end when there's that swift about-turn in
the music. I like that bit, really, and I wonder if there
were a bit more variety in this song, would I like it
even more than I do now? Possibly. But I'm not one to
criticise too much?Ķ there is more skill and
musicianship here than in any of the things I do on
MacJams. It's just, you asked my opinion and I like to
be honest. I gave it 7978, which reflects my feelings
about it pretty nicely. Keep them coming!

Good old Claudia/Susan…
Ha yes, the Babylon 5 chick, as I call her. Thanks for the comments. I like to hear what other people think because when you write something you are so close to it that you think each song is a masterpiece. I have gotten to the place, having worked as a pro producer/engineer for about 20 years, that I can sit down and criticize my own stuff and be just as brutally honest with myself as I would with others.

I really do appreciate people who take the time to listen and to honestly comment. I take it all in stride and to heart.

Thanks Again

EG said it good

Paul, you can never go back man. Just do new things, new
ideas. I can't think of anything good to come from a
fourth gen nickelnack creed revive.

Sounds like you may be stuck in the past a little. Get over
it! Go on man! MAKE NEW MUSIC. Don't give us your old
music you made. I wanna here what you are into now!

I don't think it's nostalgia, this sounds fresh to me & I dig it! This track has a bit more of a harder edge than your previous posting and works well in my opinion. I give ya 9's - keep 'em coming & thanks for sharing!
