Forge A New Life - Part 2

Get Flash to see this player.

Companion song to Forge A New Life - Part I, also posted, chronicles what happens after escaping Eastern Europe. Like Part I, this relies heavily on the PowerFX string quartet combined with cool drum loops, cut and arranged in ways they didn't expect, and a heavy dose of lifelike MIDI drums.

The song is in two sections, one that mirrors Part One themes, only this time placing the character in the USA. The second section is a vamp that uses the great drums sounds of GB and some samples I have from my old Ilio DigiDesign Sample CDs.

If the weight that once framed you
and the darkened days are all left behind,
then the mirror of your hidden hope
will reflect on this new place and time.

Working late every night, just to save what you can.
Filing letters full of words unsaid,
in American...

Like a savior that renames,
gives you courage to simply start again,
there's a genius to this crazy land
that reflects upon my face and hands.

I've come to America.
I've come to America.
I've come to America.
I've come to America, America.
Forge a new life.
Forge a new life.

Would I have learned?
Would I have earned the same mind?
Would I have burned the bridge between dreams and home
had I not left in time?

Would I have lost you
had I stayed and lived a lie?
Driven underground, every right every wrong,
wouldn't every passion die?

What of my sons?
And the sons of my sons?
Would they be proud
when the day is done?
When the day is done?
Can't go back home.
Can't go back...

the sound...
the voice is kinda Bowie, the lyrics & music are almost happy and
less-weird Leonard Cohen. interesting stuff, along with part 1.

Story telling
I listened to a number of Tobins songs, and this is one of
the best. It has a clear forward motion and a good
orchestration structure. I love the way the percussion
drops out one after another and repeats its pattern until
there is only spaces left.

Story telling
Thanks. I placed that final loop in 3 tracks, using different effects for each
track, and crossfaded them to get a gradual increase in the vocoder and
reverb effects.

great piece. a real composition. love the way you used some themes from Forge a New Life part 1 yet morphed into the totally cool vamp the the end. your music not only has fascinating lyrics and musical concepts, but paints this emotional picture inside me that i love. thank you for sharing your work here.---morning girl

Wonderful piece....from the lyrics to the multi-
layered mixing. I've only been a GB member for a few
weeks, but I have to say that I consider you a
Garageband master - GB maestro, if you will. The
only comment I would like to add is maybe some
reverb on the lead vocal. It might help give the lyrics
a transcendent quality. Your lyrics take me on a
journey. A touch of reverb and maybe a bit of echo
(not much) might help give your storytelling a
dream-like state...captivate the listener even more.

Reverb is something I am always afraid of overusing. Also, I think it is
something that can get lost in mastering and becoming tinny in conversion to
mp3. I wish the reverb sounded warmer in GB and I would be more
comfortable using it more.

I kind of like this one better than the first.
But don't get me wrong, your first one was very well done
I think.

But being the melodic person that I am, I am a sucker for
your great melodies, singing, musical craftsmanship
which you really have plenty of.

Great tune!

Thanks for sharing

Thanks. I also really am proud of some of the lyrical stanzas I this one. Less
story but perhaps a great sweep. Like Act 2 in a play, I can exploit the depth
of themes introduced in Act 1. Also, I really like the drums.

Vamping in waves of emotions
The sense of smoothness, very nice. Amazingly real
drums. I love vamps that rasie me up in waves of
emotions. Very nice, as always.
