Lurk upon the angel's shoulder

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
atonaliS & moorlandt intertwined.

The first one. Surely not the last one. The grey space between mainstream and extreme avant garde. Maybe a difficult listen. Odd chords and sometimes dissonant singing. Exploring the little borders of each other. Hard work and fun. Thanks for listening.

Composition, orchestration and all instruments: shawn evans
Vocalising and lyrics: walter vandervelde

Lyrics
Now hold me
Now hold me tight
Unfold me
In your delight

I’ve walked upon the world to find a trace of prophecy
I lurked upon the shoulder of an angel just to see
A decent piece of proof that you will not belong to me
To justify my doubts about the words addressed to me

Now hold me
Now hold me tight
Unfold me
In your delight

Most of all I like your face
The perfume of your heart
Possibly I’ll never let you down
Pardon me my attitude
My foolish imperative mood
The bruises on my crown

Time will fly
Love will die

I’ve asked so many people what the sense of love could be
And most of them replied it’s all against reality
A decent piece of proof of their constrained morality
There’s nothing I can change about the love you gave to me

Most of all I like your face
The perfume of your heart
Possibly I’ll never let you down
Pardon me my attitude
My foolish imperative mood
The bruises on my crown

All that’s left are words and letters on the wall behind the station in a city that is half way in between the places where we live our daily lives in separation.
God knows where and when we’ll meet again to celebrate our love and kiss until we’re out of breath and spend all day by doing nothing else than smoking cigarettes and making love again.

Art Rock
Totally cool. Epic and inventive, morphing and evocative. There is a little
sense that I couldn't shake that the whole thing was slightly out of
control, like a demo improv that kept getting cooler so you just stayed
with the original concept demo and never fully flushed it out; maybe it
was the off-hand pitch things, especially on the lowest notes; but I got
used to it all quickly. Also, the wordiness of that last verse washed over
me without the same sort of precision of emotion that shot like arrows in
the prior sections. Fascinating track. (Consider putting this under Art
Rock, since songs in "other" always seem orphaned to me.)

Thanks so much again, Tobin, for these very valuable comments. Extremely appreciated. And yes, you're right about the genre, so now 'art rock' it is. - walter

Bryan, there's really nothing to be jealous about :) Just trying to make music the best I can, and so glad about this coincidental intertwining with shawn, one of the most talented musicians here around. Excellent post!!!!!
What a great collab you've got going there! Walter, based on your
previous work and what I interpret as excellent musical judgement, I
knew this was going to be good before it started, Shawn's backing
makes the most of your incredibly rich voice. At first the stuttering vox
sounded a bit odd, but when I tied it in with the kick drum stutter it
made sense. I'd never noticed your english accent before Walter (that
is your regional english accent, not your flemish english accent).
This had me imagining Bahnhoff Zoo late at night - a little scary but
fascinating!
Excellent post!!!!!

accent
Hey Neil, you're spoiling me (us this time) again. Glad that you mention that accent. As a non native english singer, I'm not even aware of it. I hope it suits the song. Much adoring your latest track, man. Brought me in tears. The second time you do that to me. - walter

greatness
the lyrics are very well written. I like the singing David Slyvian comes to
mind, I enjoyed this one From beggining to end.

persued by Sylvian
Thanks a million EB for this nice comment. This Sylvian comparison comes
back again and again with each and every song I vocalise. I know it's always
meant as a huge compliment (and he's one of the best vocalisers to me as
well), but I'm trying hard to get out of this straitjacket. I will ask David to
change his style and start singing in Swahili :-) - walter

Easy Listening
Perhaps I was dropped on my head as an infant, but I don't find this
song difficult at all. In fact, the night I downloaded it from MySpace, I
played it something like nine or ten times in a row and the word,
"catchy," actually popped into my head. "Now hold me, now hold me
tight," is a killer hook in my opinion.

I love the last verse and love the way it builds. It might be cool to bring
in the "now hold me" in as an outro, just to serve as a bookend for the
rap and bring that hook in again.

LOVE THIS TO BITS AND PIECES. This is one of my favorite songs and
not just on Macjams, either. Thanks, you guys, for sharing it.
Particulate Eden said 4668 days ago (October 9th, 2006)
easy listening for you
Lisa, first of all: I don't think you were dropped on your head as a kid (at least
you don't sound like you were), but I'm sure you have a very broad and rich
scala of musically 'trained' taste and experience. Secondly: I fully agree about
your outro suggestion. This would be indeed the perfect summary of the
song. Thanks for that valluable suggestion. And third point: Throw away your
MySpace download (poooor quality over there) and redownload it again from
here!
Thanks so much again Lisa for all the support. - walter

but the snare drum sounds a lil bit 2 computerish..
try to add a real life snare sounds innit. i think that will work much better .. but cool job, and good luck with making the song better

I can't help it
but for me David Sylvian also immediately came to mind. However -
not in a bad way. There's just very few singers with this timbre in
popular music - Sylvian being one of them, it's natural to think in this
direction. Still I think your voice is unique and suits this kind of music
very well. I also like the lyrics a lot - "I%u2019ve walked upon the world to
find a trace of prophecy/I lurked upon the shoulder of an angel just to
see/A decent piece of proof that you will not belong to me"... That's
really good. Beautiful piece of work, this.
Best

intoxicatingly unique
This was downtempo, dark and moody, with strong evocative lyrics,
but still veiled in mystery... just my style! Shawn's special effects and
instrumentation were perfectly understated, creating an edgy and
unique-sounding bed for the singing, with really interesting effects
and synth sounds, but never quite glaring enough to detract from the
music or message. Instead, they were intriguing and nicely
interspersed. The slow build and release through the piece was well
orchestrated. Walter's singing was quite good in here. Although I
didn't care for the slight cracks in his voice in the beginning (on the
word "hold"), that is about the only critique I can come up with... even
the slight mispronounciation of a couple words, I thought were *good*
and added to the unusually mysterious and intoxicating feel of this
song. The last breathless stanza is sung really well and the words
hang in the air like her scent and memory after she's had to leave
again, with you wondering how to count the days until she returns.
Very glad I got to listen, thank you for all the amazing detailed work
that went into this!

Genre -leaping
Well guys, can't put this song into a little box and label it. 'Art Rock'
rings up visions of a tuneless dirge, whereas this is a stunning but
bleak piece of ... art. I love the depth of the vocal on the word 'tight', as
someone draws a razor over the vocal chords. Great structure, but I
would've liked to have heard the chorus refrain one more time, 'cause I
loved it.

'Possibly i'll never let you down' .... killer line.

More please.

yeah, that genre...
Choosing a genre for this song is indeed difficult. That's why I initially put it
under 'others', until Tobin (see first comment here) convinced me to label it
Art Rock. I think it's the genre that indeed might come the closest to the style
of the song, but I get your idea. Thanks so much for positive comments on
the lyrics too. Always blood sweat and tears for a non-native english guy like
me :-) - walter

Wonderful
Very well done. I agree with Tobin's suggestion of Art Rock. It's creative and cinematic in scope.
Just a minor production note - I hear some digital distortion at about 3:05, and again at 3:11, possibly at 4:33, 4:38), in case you end up using this mix for the cd. (I wouldn't mention a nit like that otherwise.) My ears are oddly sensitive under the influence of antibiotics this morning. Or maybe I am hallucinating. ;)
