'Court'eous Music (LLSP)

Description
Though not part of the official "Lost Songs Project," the following submission is part of the "Long-Lost Songs Project. "

Of course, no recording techniques were available at the time for such "Court-eous" music, though very recently, in the humble kitchens of a very dilapidated manor in Warwickshire, the following crude notations were found scribbled on a greasy serviette stashed in the cook's cupboard. These were presented to the Society for the Presumptuous Preservation of Preposterous Early Music by Mr. Charles A. Mindjour, of Mindjour Manor in Warwickshire.

Certainly the music dates back to the Late Medieval/Early Renaissance period, somewhere between 1350 and 1450 A.D. It is supposed, due to the location of the unlikely 'manuscript,' that the music was assuredly composed by one of the servants of the manor who, in the course of their workaday life, fancied themselves something of a composer and longed to make a big impression upon the Court Music scene.

It is performed here by the Paltry Palace Players.

The third movement...
... reminds me of part of a "Gentle Giant" song (remember them? :0 )!

This could have been the intro to a "lost song" from THEIR last album.

Very nice, Cat
Mystified said 4280 days ago (December 2nd, 2007)
yes!
I remember Gentle Giant! How could I forget? YOU introduced me to their music :)

And what a lovely compliment, Al ...thank you :)

You're right...it could have been an intro to something of theirs.

I'm glad you listened and enjoyed this one, Al :)
Thank you!

Thanks, Feter :)
I'm glad that you liked this!

I'm not really a student of Early Music so much--but I've listened to quite a bit as I studied Music History, so this is the remnant of that fading memory, lol.

Thanks again!

Nicely Done
Very renaissance feel with some of those more modern harmonies creeping in there :-)

Modern harmonies??
Well...you know what they say? That the servant of Mindjour Manor was wayyy ahead of his time in his chord constructions, which is probably one reason why he never was very popular in his day ;)

But, seriously--thanks for dropping by for a listen, and taking the time to leave a comment.

This was a fun little challenge for me :)

Could be...
...almost...an outtake from John Renbourn's 'Lady And The Unicorn' or 'Sir John A Lot of Merry England's Music Thyng and Ye Greene Knight'...

Really...

With some vocals, which you could certainly do, it would drop right into an Anonymous 4 recording...

So I'm gonna have to go with Molly Hatchet...

Ay,
Makes me remember my youth when I played a small tombone-like instrument in a renaissance ensamble. This do seem to be even older than that music we played, but it's very nice to listen to.

And after looking up Paltry, I think ye may just want to change yer name, ladies and gents, this was great!

(Hm, Pompous wouldn't do, of course, but possibly Prolific or Praised or even Prakriti - though probably not - or Prancing? No, I've got it: The Precious Palace Players!)

Thanks for the treat!

/Henke

Nice track
very authentic, is it the music to Romeo and Juliet or was it done by Beckett. Really well done and I like this different sections to the whole track. Can imagine this music played in all the Renaissance royal courts throughout Europe.

due
to my complete ignorance of this genre, I will have to be content saying this is really beautiful. you said renaissance, so i know you're not aping some long lost prog band (although i could hear this as an intro on a number of Jethro Tull songs). You know this music well, i'm impressed fair maiden.

Court Music scene
...I wish that poor, unknown servant well, for surely this is a kind and gentle song which would find considerable favour. Verily, if that poor unknown servant were to step upon our decades he might find himself upon great stages of progressive rock arenas of such bounty that Jethro Tull would be compared frequently and with great cheer.

ageofthedeathtree said 4280 days ago (December 2nd, 2007)
just a guess...finally
my wife helped me a bit of this one, but sounds a lot like the "lost companion song" to Greensleeves. thing is, all i could find on it's composer was that king henry VIII was supposed to have written it (but never proven). once again, beautiful tune though!

Your text reminds me
of something that Prof. Peter Schickele might have written - takes me back to my mis-spent youth listening to faux madrigals and such ('running knows, running knows,etc.....You had to be there). Humour aside, the tunes are lovely and certainly reminiscent of the period (or at least how we thought it sounded back then :o) )
Thanks, and keep well!

Out of my league
to even fathom a guess (unless it's a very cleverly disguised Metallica tune, heehee)

A wonderful tune and will be curious to find out who the "lost song" is from.

Wow
This would be totally fitting for some renaissance scenery in a movie. Really excellent, Cat!

Not sure what album it's from... maybe "Mincemeat Food Poisoning".

Coulda sworn I posted here a long time ago
but I must gave been too mystified to hit the post button. This is a brilliant piece of music - though I couldn't hazard a guess as to who it is. I have a Deutsche Grammophone record of medieval masque music that I used to play all the time. Thanks for posting.
I just figured it out! It's the lost soundtrack to Spamalot performed by The Ruttles unplugged.

3, 2, 1... Andes off!
Funny, the first half, if you sped it up a bit, and replaced the recorder with pan pipes, would sound exactly like some Bolivian/Peruvian folk music (which further illustrates my theory that all countries' folk music sounds strangely similar). Good second section, very Renaissance-sounding, and the final section is very humorous, with the players now being quite full of mead, and completely lost to any kind of rhythm.

I love your wordplay in the description, of course. And I've BEEN to Warwick castle! Anyway, very well-captured, you have a good Renais-sense.

ttfn,
Drakonis

Utterly charming
Really lovely piece you have here. A bit like a suite of various movements?

The lute occasionally produces some clicking sounds and there are some places where two notes follow really closely together. Quantization problem?

Hey, nice polyphony too! Not just playing in thirds. That would have been too easy. And probably unidiomatic.
