Song Description

this song is for the Lost Songs Project.

perhaps this one is more like a song lost from an alternate reality.

Heraclitus said something like: No one can ever step in the same river twice.

here i tried to capture the impression i had as a kid when i first heard a particular new song. since then, the world has changed, and i have changed. so this is not a copy of the style of that song, but perhaps an exaggeration of the changes it ushered in.

can you guess which group and single inspired this?

(in the just-for-yucks department, part of the chords here originated from this song: http://www.macjams.com/song/36887)

Lyrics
People (Running Through My Mind)

in the village square children meet
playing hide and seek
people running through my mind

there's an old guy walking his dog
and the women jog
people running through my mind

every day
the sun comes out
it fills the sky
with rainbow colors

every night
is filled with dreams
the shining light
of endless peace

and the mailman solemnly walks
dropping off a box
people running through my mind

there's a carousel in the park
spinning in the dark
people running through my mind

there's an old guy walking his dog
and the women jog
people running through my mind

in the village square children meet
playing hide and seek
people running through my mind

every night
is filled with dreams
the shining light
of endless peace

in the village square children meet
playing hide and seek
people running through my mind

strange one hehe
I would guess at mid 70's Kinks? or possibly something off Xtc's Skylarking album?
I like the melodies on this one

Tricky
Great song. I can see where Steve got his XTC and Kinks ideas from. Maybe Brian Wilson or Todd Rundgren?

I was initially thinking
The Kinks - Village Green Preservation Society - then I thought maybe it's The Beatles - Penny Lane - which led to Floyd's Arnold Layne...but I think for now I'm sticking with the Kinks though the timing's a little off with that record - it seems a little late for your formative experience.

Am I supposed to say AHA! I've got it?
Rainbow Connection from the first Muppet Movie seems too obvious based on your hint. I don't think you'd make it that easy.

Hi Bill...
I stopped by... I really did... And I'm stumped...

The village square and carousel are certainly a lot of British mid-Sixties stuff...From Penny Lane to Ogden's Nut Gone Flake to Piper At The Gates of Dawn to Village Green Preservation Society...

ANd I just don't know...

I have
no idea... sounds like it could have come from almost any decade... I can see why The Kinks get a mention but I'm really not sure. Nice song.

ha ha!
Great stuff Mr. Bill! I too hear a bit of Ray Davies and the boys. Also the Small Faces a la Ogden's Nut Gone Flake is a slightly more remote contender.

LSP aside, this is a fine bit of tuneage in it's own right. Excellent keyboard work and exceptionally good vocals and vocal harmonies.

Be well friend!

But this is an excellent submission to LSP! I'm really enjoying all of the entries so far. Too bad I didn't have the time to finish mine. Maybe next time....

Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh!!!!!
I know this I know this I know this I know this.... damnit, I don't know this! But I know it, it's just there, right there.... got this image of psychedelic fields of butterflies and flowers and a certain 45rpn record going around and around in front of me... I need to focus on this. Must go to my train room and think.

As a tune, this is absolutely wonderful in it's own right - but I've got the answer just dancing out of my reach. Arghh!

I've got a week to think about it. Think think think.

Let's see... Kermit never covered an Association song, although Sweedums the Monster did. Is it Windy, by the Association?

Very Interesting
Eels? Don't know there albums even though I have one of them. Or it could be They Might Be Giants, again don't really remember what the albums called without going through my old tape collection.
Very cool track. Love all the layers to the track, its very well composed.
Just an after thought: King Crimson?

Wow what a wonderful alternative universe. Such a happy song with such warped chord progressions. Perfect execution of this song.

Smokey
Great tune. I feel the early '70s inspiration. Could even be Nilsson, although the Beatle and Newman suggestions sound good too. I'm not hearing the Kinks connection, but that may be because of the style shift so maybe....

Ouch my brain is in knots. Great Bill song!

Thanks

It's a bit blurry!
Great song, but to me it's definitely more Blur than Kinks - I love them both, so who cares!

Great song "in the British tradition".

Top post.

Can't remember the artist...
...or maybe even the title...but there's a line in the original:

"I love the summer girl..."

?

Or The Kinks...man...it's on the tip of my tongue...

You can't go home again...
but beautiful memories are blessed things - simpler times, and the way songs mark moments in our lives - and hearing them now instantly takes us back to those sunny places. :-) I don't know why I'm thinking of "The Circle Game" and "Both Sides Now" Maybe it's just a nostalgic brain hiccup. :-) The music in the beginning makes me think of another song - but I'll be darned if I can place it...

Maybe it has something to do with "Nothing" , but I still can't place the song. :-P

Although the lyrics do seem to suggest Penny Lane, or China Grove, or Sweet Home Alabama, or how 'bout ... Oh, I give up... give me another hint :-)
Moviz said 4240 days ago (December 8th, 2007)
My
last chance for a guess at this song and I'd say 'The Beatles' because of the pictorial lyrics of this well thought out song. The instrumentation is brill, regards M
