Description
Sometimes I’m not sure what kind of music it is I make. This is a good example – the genre options don’t seem to fit! I do recommend you play it loud though – and try to get to the end for the sonic rewards….

Production wise I think I’ve made a few steps forward here and have got a pretty good mix – I’ve thought a lot more about each instrument and it’s place in the mix, and on the whole I think it’s an improvement on previous uploads (but still not sure about the vocal – let me know what you think).

Musically a few things are making their debut here: in the second half of the song I’m using EZ Drums for the first time; my 1968 Fender Telecaster also appears throughout, but the biggest change is real, live Bass playing – which is soooo much better than MIDI samples!

Lyrically, this is all inspired by visiting Japan, a country of immense contrasts, which is both progressive and innovative, but at the same time incredibly repressed. The lyrics are deliberately ambiguous, but hopefully convey a slightly sinister twist; like Japan itself, there is often something quite seedy lurking just beneath the pristine surface.

Enjoy, and as always I appreciate your constructive comments – positive or negative.

Everything Available In Your Hand
(Music & Lyrics by Phil Dolby © 2008)

Her name is Yoko - Yoko Yoshimoto
She comes from Kobe, works in Kyoto
When she smiled oh-so-politely
For the very first photo
Didn’t realise her time had come
And it was time to go

Now I see your picture on the wall
You look so fragile, you look so small
And I know you’ve done all that you can
When everything’s available in the palm of your hand
Everything available in your hand

His name is Leo, he comes from Idaho
He wants to see how fast the bullet train can go
When he steps out of the airplane
Tarmac in Tokyo
Didn’t realise his time had come
And it was time to go

I’ve seen your picture on the wall
You look so angry, you look so cold
And I know you’ve done all that you can
With everything available in the palm of your hand
Everything available in your hand

And I know it doesn’t make sense
You lied to the government, and lied to your friends
And I know it’s a matter of confidence
What’s available in the palm of your hand
Is just an SOS that’s written in the sand

Everything available in the palm of your hand
Everything in your hand...

It's good
Solid song. The stuff I like best, though, is the background sounds (drum rolls, crowds) that pull it along and seem to imply that there's more on the way.... You could achieve pop-anthem stardon here by doubling the lead and building the BV track to epic numbers by the very end. If you're so inclined, that is.

Best,

I meant to add
it's great to hear a new Dolby song.

And of course, I meant to type "stardom", (rhymes with "hard-om").

Cheers,

Hi sonnyjim
Thanks for that - this is actually the 'radio friendly' edited version. The original did just what you suggest with a super-long ending and multi-layered vocal 'choir' building to a finish as all the instruments drop out. The problem I had was that continually layering my voice just ends up sounding like a mush - what I need is a 'community' of different sounding voices to get that true choral feel. Now, any ideas where i might find such a community.....?

Great
Vocals Mr. Dolby! Excellent.

Nice guitar work!

I personally could use the bass up just a bit. It sounds like a nice line and I just have trouble hearing it even in the phones.

That's the only pick I can make on an excellent song!

As I listened I read
the description. Live bass... well my friend I thought I liked it just couldn't hear it real well. I wish you had brought it up some... it sounds totally cool!

The ending is a kick and love the guitar work and also the tinker bells give a nice break!

Really wonderful! Show me the bass!

Okay...
...I will!

Thanks for the comment Mark. I think I agree, but still a bit shy about setting the bass too high - there are a few very low notes which were rattling my monitors, so I eased off a bit. I will go back and listen again - thanks for stopping by.

Nice going Phil
Like your vocal delivery. Great dynamics. It's kind of a country song done by a rocker. Very nice blend.

A lot of little surprises around every corner.

You should be proud of this one.

everything
sounds well placed and your vocal stands out impressively. I particularly like the change up at 2:04. Very cool musical interlude that follows that as well. You are right it would be hard to genre catalog this, but to me thats what makes it such a cool track. immense imagination at work here.

Hi KTB
Yeah, I'm chuffed with the change at 2.04 - it's a nice musical diversion. I'm also pleased with he section that follows - but I'm not sure i wrote it! It sounds like something else, but not sure what - maybe an old Beatles thing that's subliminally lodged in the brain!

Thanks for the comment!

Great textures
... evoking the spirit of Nihon. Wonderful vocal here and I love the Hammond organ type sound in the back there - you've managed to incorporate Western and Japanese sounds into a really satisfying mix.
Another one for my iPod.

Glad you made it. Yeah I like the organ sound as well - fairly straight forward, but didn't want anything too synthy, or orchestra like. Thanks for the comment - it's appreciated!

Very interesting song. Nice and interesting arrangement; these contrasts give a good energy to the song, not a dull mument. The lyrics leaves open for a lot of fantasy and interpretations. They catch interest.

Good work!

this sounds great, really interesting drum parts throughout (like the little far away sounding roll in the chorus before it gets loud). great production, always nice you pick up a few skills huh? i like the subject matter too: i am a bit of a japan-ophile myself (mostly art and experimental electronic composers - can't stand the food tho). great job. nice ending BTW.

Thanks Michael
I like that you picked up on the drums - I did that Peter Gabriel thing of "no crash cymbals". It's actually a mix of GB drum machine pencilled in, then a rock loop with the accent changed onto the snare rather than the bass drum, then a hip-hop loop, then the EZ drums at the end!

As for Japanese food - there where only three things wrong with it for me: the temperature, the texture and the taste!

strange, there is me thinking this morning about doing another song about Japan and i come across this. I can not convey in words my Japanese experiences, but i recognise them in in what you are trying to say in this song.

i thought the song was going in a different direction at the start. I like that break, and attention to details it makes all the difference. It could be a Jon Lennon song.

Nice Production
Definitely a mix of musical styles as it has already been mentioned. I especially like the contrasts of sounds - the plucky guitar parts with the organ and keys and the distorted guitar as it rips into the power chord.

Very well done
I am glad I stopped by, this is a top notch production, and a very well written song. I can relate to the trepidation you have about the bass. What I could hear of it, tells me that in this case your fear is totally unfounded. Bump it up a notch and let the monitors rumble a bit. ;o)

land of contrasts
yea thats exactly what people who have visited from Japan tell me. This would make a good camp song. I know that sounds nuts but its a cool song. I like how the chorus widens and narrows throughout the song. Wow. I'm hearing the xylophone bit. That is lovely stuff mate.

wonderful
Lots of interesting things happening here. But it meshes well. I can tell you were very precise with the instrumentation. The lyrics are a wonderful mystery that I still don't think I've got a grasp of. But that's the fun part. Great tune!

Sweet, Sad, Mysterious
...you have this masterful way of conveying contrasts that have been balanced together in such a way that they become as dancers, intimately familiar with each other and sweeping across the floor, lost to the moment. We watch the dancers, thinking that maybe we know the dance too, but then we see their eyes, the way they look at each other - and suddenly we're not so sure, because there's far more to their dance than we realize.

There's a lush sweetness to this song that doesn't hide the unease and apprehension in the lyrics; but nor does it attempt to accentuate it either, and that's the thing I'm talking about here - in my typically clumsy way. The gentle smoothness is intimately part of something else mysterious and dark, and both are very familiar with each other but we, as outsiders, can't understand that connection between them. You echo this again and again, with delicate touches of sweet kindness in a landscape of something else vast, impenetrable and unyielding.

Masterful!

Clear As A Bell
Phil, your voice is full of clarity - every word heard without the need for printed lyrics. Big chords come as a surprise, but work really well.

Very picturesque - I see the story unfolding. The middle break has some weird and wonderful sounds traveling under your voice.

No genre for this, however can I make one comparison? Justin Hayward - have you had that one before? There is something in your vox that is similar, IMO. No bad thing.

Big build of guitars at the end works well and the dead stop is spot on (I thought it would fade with the military drumming, but you caught me out!)

Different in a good way, Phil. Well crafted all the way through.

DL'd.

Thanks Jim
I really appreciate your comments -

Must admit I've never really thought of Justin Hayward, but I can see where you're coming from. Interestingly, on a new track I'm currently working on I've deliberately sung in a very 'English' accent (trying to avoid the mid-Atlantic trap), and the vocal is super-crystal-clear. I hope to upload sometime next week so you can tell me what you think!

Thanks for visiting -

Well crafted song
Vocal is so clear, it just draws you right in to the story. The lightness in places disguises a more sinister aspect as you punctuate these darker moments with some sharp guitar work.

So glad to have stopped here. Really impressed.

all there
the EZ drums kick in and make a difference, i'm looking for a thread to tie all the flavors together, your voice does it and i am looking for the keyboard to maybe more subtle and the guitar more pronounced. its all there. have you listened to it at low volume? it helps to insure the "little" elements are present, good work
