Description
Well, I was thinking about uploading this song anyway, but we learned of the loss of a grandparent this morning so it became more appropriate. A lot of my songs are infected by my own sort of random wondering and/or venting about loss, death etc. The reason is simply because I lost a few. My real dad, my step dad after that, my sister, a best friend, and then the more common grandparents, etc. More than usual and many of them while I was still quite young. I have learned, for better or for worse to kind of steel myself to the effects of the loss, but in some ways I still feel a kind of an inexplicable "hole" effect about the whole thing, as if there is a vortex pulling bits and pieces from my life and I can't see through the thing at all. I mean really, that's true isn't it. The enigma is probably the worst part, or maybe the best/easiest part. It's really hard to know. Songs I have done may paint loss in different lights, but really a lot of them are about this. I definitely do NOT have all the answers, but I do have... Life, Love, Experience. These are things I try to hang on to as long as I can.

This song is the intro track to Between the Lines. It is a combination of Punk, Blues, Folk, etc. I don't know what genre to call it and I hardly care. As always I am kind of saddened that so many other people do. Does it really matter? There is really only one question... what does it do for you? Anything? If not then it sucks. If yes, then ok then, --that's what it is. Exactly. Nothing more, nothing less.

In passing I'd like to point out that the lyric at the end about the leaves falling... for me at least that is fascinating. Because, although those leaves fall and die, and as they pass, yes, life was too hard for them. But the really amazing part... spring comes again. Life begins anew. That is something that a person who loses can't always see, but if they hang on long enough, they learn the truth. Life goes on. Cycles of life, cycles of loss. I guess I am hinting at that in some way.

--thanks

Oh PS I want to add, I'm not looking for sympathy posts. Please refrain, although in some way there would be an appreciation. I wrote this song over 6 years ago. Wow time flies. Seems not that long ago. I was planning to post it today either way. Things just turned out to be different than I expected. But we live in the moment, and today is what today is. I can't change today or the thoughts of today any more than you can. In the spirit of being genuine, I have no choice but to speak in the present, and I hope you live in the present also, real. So just take it at face value and I hope there is enough "realness" in it that there is an impact. That's all I ever wanted. Anyway, thanks again and good day.

Lyrics
i've seen rivers running
but i don't know where they go
i've seen flowers blooming
but i don't know why they grow

i'm waiting here for all of the answers
can you tell me how it ends
i want to know why the moments fly away
all the way to the end

the sun goes down in a red sky
and the night is filled with stars
can you tell me where i'm going,
i've lost my way in the dark
the leaves on the trees are falling,
i guess this life was too hard

pacing
Thanks Kassia, and I am glad you commented about the pacing. I think I worked with this song before I decided on the right time signature and tempo. Although I have an understanding of some of the music technicalities, like you I really focus more on the way it sounds, the performance factor, so honestly I'm not sure if I am following a single time signature the whole way through or not. But the tempo is definitely the same, and I am pretty sure I slowed it down for this final version (making it more "deliberate"). As for the lyrics being poetic, there is always the chance some might call stuff like this "cheesy". But the way I look at it is any song I could write may have been sung 1000 times before, just like persons have been in love 1000 times before (ok try billions of times). That doesn't mean that the first time I feel something it's somehow instantly "cliche". How can it be? It's my life. Well, I don't always sing directly from personal experience either, but to borrow from another thread I'm definitely a "method" actor as far as I understand it. If I can't find a shred of reality in a song then it's meaningless to me. I might sing about something that never happened, but whatever it is I always believe in it on some level. Ok too much talk, thanks much for coming! Great to hear from you!

Yeah great bro
Great to hear a track that is made up with musical instruments, the real deal. Lyrics and your voice are special on this, sweet harmonies. Overall great performance. Sometimes sadness is a great inspiration, i know for me it has had some powerful effect whilst thinking about concepts for music and photography. Sorry to hear about your losses, but if it provoked this track then there should be joy in the creative process and this song. I hear all sorts of influences, like you mention. Pogues, strangelers and clapton all good to my ears, cheers.

layers upon layers
So go the experiences of our lives. And as we share, we take on and exude parts of the experiences of others, until we operate to some degree as a whole. That must be how the influences of which I could not claim get attributed to me! Yes, sorrow is the kind of emotion that drives you to want to expel it, I think that is why maybe it fuels outward creativity. Positive emotions are the kind you are more likely wanting to savor and retain. For me I am not driven to create based on the positive. I don't like that, because really I'd rather share the positive. Until I figure out how to do that, I share the positive of catharsis. And I hope it has some value. Thanks for coming by.

old school
What once was the new will become the old. I guess that is the way of things, and I will have to learn to accept it. Even though I don't like the sound of that! Thanks for coming by, I've stopped by one of your tunes, but I'll be back to hear more in time. I appreciate it!

Rock
Funny Feter in many ways I don't think of most of my songs as Rock or Driving or the other things you apply to me, but then when I hear your works, they are very different from mine. So your perspective is just different! I guess we all have our own way of doing things. Thanks for coming over!!!!

What a pleasure it is
to hear from any/all the people who were motivated by my song to comment, but in particular, I revel in the attention of a great like you Magnatone. I have noted you have a very open musical mind, which I appreciate, but still with your capabilities to discriminate, it's just amazing to hear positive words from you! I hope we see more of each other as time goes on.

killer bass
i love that bass line - it just slams and drives this piece. The choruses have a 70's feel to them - something about the dual vocals. Great mix of styles.

Bass
I'm very glad you noticed and commented on that. I really enjoyed the layering on this song and I feel like the bass is absolutely pivotal. Man with all the influences I've decided to embrace, who knows! The main song from the 70's that I ever really loved was "last game of the season" about a blind father watching his son play from above. What some might call cheesy, but I always thought it was cool, probably because it had some realness in it for me. I believe the "unknown" who recorded that was named "David Gedde" or something. Not sure I am spelling it right.

for stopping by. A comment from you means quite a lot to me. You have such an ability to create unique and new songs! If you ever have any thoughts to offer about the production and/or performance, I'd like to hear them, even though I won't be remixing these particular older tracks, I can learn from your experience and insight, which might influence later work. Thanks for your time!
