This is a first-round demo for a songwriting pitch. Excuse the vocals...hope to tidy things up later, but for the moment we're working to get some feedback on the song...what works for you? What doesn't? Thanks!

Story of Her Life © 2009 John Parker/Janice Hopkins

She’s got a suitcase full of dreams
And it’s bursting at the seams
‘Cause her future’s starting right now

True, just a girl of twenty-two
At a loss for what to do
But she knows she’ll make it someway, somehow

Chorus 1:

She don’t know much ‘bout where this thing they call real life is goin’
In such a rush, can’t hold her back and what’s the point of knowin’
Makin’ her way is what it’s all about
Day by day just livin’ each line
That writes the Story of Her Life

Now thirty-nine and not sure how
Nothing seemed to quite work out
Every page she turns leaves more regret

Time’s often anything but kind
Not sure what she thought she’d find
If it’s out there she ain’t seen it yet

She don’t know much ‘bout where this roller coaster life is goin’
She feels so rushed with all it’s ups and down, pushin’ and pullin’
Sometimes this world can leave her inside out
If she finds a way, says she just might
Rewrite the Story of Her Life

Now when she looks back on those dreams
She swears she wouldn’t change a thing
Every heartbreak’s just a stepping stone to what she really needed

Still time moves on and she will too
But she’s got nothing left to prove
She made it on her own but in the end you know that she still believes that….

Last Chorus:
She don’t know much ‘bout where this thing she called her life is goin’
She can’t be rushed to reach that end ‘cause what’s the point in knowin’
How it all turns out when that light goes out
In these final days relivin’ each line
That wrote the Story of Her Life

Sorry, let me apologize first, I used to make these for a living, at least a thousand or so...best of luck my friend. Visit Nashville now, plenty of company, a beautiful city full of dreams.

Hey John
Your vocals always sound great. The only thing I would suggest is add a break with some lead and a bridge somewhere - it's a bit repetitive, as good as it is, even. Then the song might get rather long, so you might have to cut out a verse. Some backing vocals (ahhhh-ahhhh-ahhhh) in the second and or third chorus could help to build a progression as well.

You asked :)

Balanced, solid writing
Excellent writing. Wonderfully balanced lines, lyrics, melodic ease. I could imagine this as a them song for a movie, in its generic lack of detail over-arching narrative framework. Love the storytelling aspect, and the clear clean vocals. Very enjoyable.

John and Janice,

Contemporary feel, which is a big plus now. Good Story, which is engaging. Melody works well with the story. Lyrics are a bit wordy and could use a little tightening, but move the story along. Chorus is a bit repetitive of the melody, perhaps think of starting it melodically and lyrically at "Makin' her way". I think this song has every potential to break into the market, but as Daugrin says Nashville is a town where you'll have plenty of company and dreams. Persist, Persist, Persist.

Much different from the first version
I really like it and I believe it's where you've been wanting to go with your music. The mix is really good and your vocals are fantastic. Well placed pauses and breaks.

i do like you voice. you should put it up in the mix.even if you dont think
it is working. i think the bass needs to drive the beat a bit more. i like the before and after thing and the message is good. nice to hear you again
