Spirit Haunting ( A day in the Life of a conscious Ghost )

Get Flash to see this player.

A song idea i'm working on that is close to complete.

I sat down one day and pondered what it would be like to live as a ghost.
Then I started thinking about ghosts as individuals.

Are all ghosts scary?
Is it mandatory for a ghost to haunt or is there room for growth?
Do they maintain apart of their former self,
or is their personality and essence stripped upon leaving the land of the living?

Anyways, The song is about a ghost that lost his way
but maintained his past memories and experiences.
He is very much intact with the image of his former self, so he is
a ghost with emotion, judgement, and most importantly a consciuos.

Feeling for humankind, instead of haunting the living, he hunts and haunts the dead.
his wish is to banish them back to the spirit world in which they
were destined for to begin with. He accomplishes this by different means.

It is said that some ghosts have the choice to remain in the world of the living.
It is also said that some are bound by curse until they find
the closure they need to let the soul rest.

his mission:

To either scare the ghosts back into the spirit realm,
or by helping them find the closure they need
in order to leave peacefully.

I would love some feedback on the overall sound.
If anything sounds like it needs fixing or adjusting, let me know.
Thanks in advance, and I hope you enjoy.
( I'm looking into some ghost effects for certain parts )
( Also, i'm thinking of adding maybe some more reverb in parts, given the nature )

If anyone thinks they can follow the concept and provide some good writing and vocals
let me know. I would love to hear this as a complete song.

I can give more on the background of the track if interested. I also have a
a few other avenues we could take it, but still relates to haunting.

* No Loops.
Played the elec guitar parts.
Everything else is VST sequenced inside cubase 4.

As different as anything I havent heard. This is wierd without being uncomfortable, directionless but with aim and makes me want a resolution that the character it is about could not have. Kudos.

What a very unusual
and creative concept. A ghost haunting and frightening other ghosts - different. Like the mix of heavy beats and effective (and well played) guitar chords. Great panning separation and mix. My only thought at the moment is that it maybe needs a change somewhere in there, maybe a key change and then back. Looking forward to where this goes. Great stuff.

Strangely compelling!
Interesting rhythm track. Effective use of strings. I like both the concept and the execution. Reminiscent of late King Crimson! KUDOS!

Be well friend!

jay, this is REALLY interesting and cool! i agree with len's thought about trying a key change in there - maybe even more than one i'm thinking - to keep it moving and to keep interest. (or you could make a change to 6/8) (JUST KIDDING) i love your guitar work in here - great start - anxious to hear what comes next with this!

A "Purga" Story...
Stuck between, helping ferry other lost souls to their destination. Interesting story idea.

I am not usually one for constant dissonance, but this works, and fits. There's a constant continuity that the strong rhythm generates, sort of an "I'm on a mission" focus... but that's overlaid on a very slippery musical bed that gives a feeling of instability and vertigo... very cool to be able to convey that in music.

But, it is a single musical "section", just the "on-a-mission statement"... I was waiting for a contrasting section to break this up... you could either give a lengthy intro with JUST the ethereal soft slippery synths, and then lead into the gritty drum-driven track... then drop back to the soft section, etc... or come up with some other voices and chords for a B section, and just alternate between them a couple of times (ABAB.) Thems my thoughts. Weirdly good stuff, and nice guitar work!

Love that

melody at :40 and 1:05 and 2:45. What you're talking about is a ghost who's a ghost whisperer. Personally, I'm thinking that once you get the "get out of life card", you have better things to do than keep playing down here. Perhaps this ghost is misguided.
You have the mood. Like it. Thanks.

Since my house is haunted......
(I know everybody grins at that).... Anyway I got it and think the concept is wonderful. My ghost likes to play and is quite talented. Thanks for the tune.

Personally, I wouldn't put words on this. Maybe just a couple of little melodic snippets way back in the mix with some wild wet FX, like a wail out of the abyss to tease the listener. I love that really dirty kick, but I'd put it in the centre if I were you, and rather give it some stereo reverb or something to deepen its stereo quality.

Great atmosphere....
This immediately sets an eerie tone... a very cool one at that. Though repetitious, it is not boring, rather I found myself drawn into its hypnotic rhythm and trance tones. Very good composition.

interesting take
That reverb in the drum really brings out the concept you are portraying here. Like the way the music is smooth yet murky.

Great yet eerie song!
It was fun to listen to! Eerie but flowed well! One of the electric guitars felt a lil too strong/harsh for it, but the rest was a great arrangement!

What a great story line and your music tells the story so well! I love how you made the bass and drum hits punctuate throughout the track...it really gives it this supernatural effect. As usual, your creativity captivates!!
kassia said 3326 days ago (January 9th, 2010)
amazing how you've created a shifty, hard to pin down slips right out from under your fingers sort of feel to this. smoky smooth yet deliberate. i agree that this feels like only a small part of the story. the concept is brilliant and engaging, but i feel like the music only begins the story. does he fulfill his quest? is there resolution or is it neverending? you said he still has human emotions - where are THOSE in this story? such an excellent excellent start to this piece. i think so many more layers could be added to bring this story to life. and continue the journey - where does this take him (and us)?

Unable to rest
Nice ghostly sound with the bass that gives the perpetual motion feeling (=no rest for this ghost). I found some interesting sounds and effects in the free Kore Player and free soundbanks supplied with it (could find some ghosts in there maybe). Kind of a James Bond

and eerie sounds in this one. Like the distorted drum sounds, they really add a depth to the song. Ethereal guitars give the song the airy highs it needs. I like the feel this one has. This would be cool in a movie soundtrack or something of that nature. Cool work here!

Ya.. kool concept and despite needing more you kept it interesting. The synth that came in towards the end had a nice ghosty sound to it. Would be great to get a little more of that in both variety and prominence.
Glad I found you and your music.

Great concept!
I like the chord structure and the choice of sounds, except perhaps the drum beat is a bit constant to my ears. Maybe change it up by shifting drum patterns or removing it for a few measures? A stop/start kind of thing could be effective.

I really like the sustained "ghosty" sound with the cluster chords. Excellent! You might try swelling and decreasing the volume on those, and/or phase L-R. This might bring more momentum and direction to that cool effect.

The overall concept of this piece is quite interesting and there's a lot of potential to be explored. The thing that sticks in my mind is: VARY THE TEXTURE. Lots of cool stuff here.

Interesting concept
esp if it going to inspire tracks like this. Good solid beats and nice melodies. Really like the bass as well, it helps drive a very solid, full on track. Nicely done.

Id agree
with most of the comments here. Some extremely constructive advice. Mostly I'd have either some kind of change in the middle or a modulation to a different section. I also can see how the addition of vocals would alleviate some of the sameyness by adding interest and making this merely a very interesting and slippery (great comment Kassia) instrumental bed. One thing I'd try is dropping one of the guitar arpeggios back into the reverb somewhere between the foreground and the pad and therefore give you less clutter between the two interesting guitar breaks (around the 2 min mark and other places) The sound quality is excellent as is the majority of the mix. Sound choices are strong too. The concept is very interesting and I'd agree needs resolution perhaps in the next track (or two!)

Overall a great listen. Thanks!

Spooky synths
The guitar could be pushed a bit further back to mesh better with the synths. Ok, make that a whole lot further back.

You key parts are cool. Love that epiano ascending riff after 2:00.

love to hear this with some VOX. I absolutely love the industrial sounding low end. I've been trying to figure that out for a new song and it isn't that easy.
