Dismal Days

This song is not what I had intended to post next but, following an unpleasant incident at work last week, I felt compelled to create this and post it quickly before I calmed down ;-)

I don't expect anyone to enjoy it (unless you revel in stuff like this) but you might find something of interest.

Lyrics by Richard Miller
June 25-29, 2010

Beware of men with rubber stamps
asking if you'd like to dance!
A honeyed kiss from ruby lips
would drive away this rain,
But stronger fare is needed here
to overcome the pain.

If I had known before I woke
that this was mostly bling and smoke,
that I would have to shuck and jive
just to keep myself alive,
I surely would have foregone birth
and saved myself this hell on earth.

I'd have stayed inside my mother's womb,
full knowing that I'd seal my doom:
That tomb is where I'd rather be
than face your warped reality.
Horses' asses come and go
they're all the same: they run the show.

The more I learn the less I know:
it happens everywhere I go.
If I look up and see you down,
I hope I won't just turn around.
I don't fit in with any crowd:
I can only scream so loud.

We've all been there...
..but not many of us can capture it quite so evocatively. These sorts of life experiences are what lead to good art...

dismal days
you know what richard...i am having such a fucking shit day today. i just commented on this piece, but having had my last comment disappear into the fucking ether i now copy and save everything i write just in case it happens again. so that's what i did just now...wrote you a long comment...and then right clicked and command a to highlight and save...only for some self-destructive reason i hit command q instead....and of course shut down my browser. if there had been a knife handy i would have gladly severed my carotid artery and shuffled off this mortal coil with the remnants of your tune reverberating through my head. this song is cool....dismally so...depressingly so. if there was a macjam challenge for the most suicide-invoking song...then this would win hands down...no wait - slashed wrists down.
the loop bass at the beginning is so known...but what you do on top of it is wild...and i love your lyrics and the vocal game you're playing.
great track.

I don't think enjoy would be the correct word anyway. Sometimes art is not created for the enjoyment of the audience but rather to reflect the feelings of the artist. No, I didn't enjoy it. It's pretty harsh in it's message. But I do like it. And I'm impressed by the quality of your work. When I first heard the upright bass I thought, wow, Richard does jazz. Then you took me to a completely different and unexpected place.

I have...
I have done the same thing . A real bad day at work. Like Lost my job!!
I was very upset. I came up with a song called Thrown away. I felt better after writing and recording that song. I like the string bass. Is that you on guitar? I like the feel of this song.

Dismal indeed
but then life can be that way sometimes, and this reflects the despair that those days can cause in the human soul. Yes this is dark, but it is a shared emotional reaction to people who are Ass Holes. They are all around us, all the time. Mostly we just ignore them, but for some reason they always end up in a position where they have power over us. That is when they can have the greatest effect on our psyche.
Hate this/Love this all at the same time. What it say hurts, the way you said it is a gift. The comment above about Marvin the depressed robot in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy adds some comic relief, but only to a point.

Thanks for this Richard, it's daunting and delightful in the same breath.

Yeah, we've all had days like this (or month or years). The lyric expresses the feeling well. Like the bass groove, and picked guitar line.

Well this sounds great. I love the way the rhythm of the spoken words fits with the whole rhythm of the piece. The disharmony is perfect as are the sfx and that bass line is killer! Really terrific work. I'm sorry about the actual reason for the track.

I'm afraid of heights, no ladder-climbing for me
Nicely affected speech over darkly appropriately repetitive music, really gives this a chilling bite... well done... but I am very sad to hear that this was personally inspired. Perhaps there is some reality-warping you can spin back sometime to avenge the slimy rubber stamper.
Best of luck,

Misery loves expression
Richard the Thirteenth - it sounds so Shakespearean : )

But then, so does this song.

I don't know if there's any way to prevent the assholes from taking over; the best we can do is slow them down now and then.

Misery loves expression - we can all relate to the injustice of on-the-job slights. (That is, assuming you have employment in these dull times.) You express that uneasiness well in this piece. The pointed lyrics fit well into the musical flow. I really like that repetitive two-note flickering guitar in the first half of the song - it is so catchy in its relentless simplicity. I wouldn't mind if it buzzed off into thematic variation later on.

All in all, other than the theme, there's nothing dismal about this piece. Good post.

focused on the rain rather than the big picture. Quite appropriate. Evil sounding tune. Pretty darn dark lyrics too! We have all been there !
