This song is a bit contentious - some folk love it and some folk hate it, all because of the violin = let me know what you think

I’ve never been to Boston
But I’m flying there tonight
Crossing Martha’s Vineyard
On a transatlantic flight
Looking for the runway
Through a glass of dry Merlot
And Boston sparkles pretty
When there’s nowhere else to go

I’ve been drinking hard since Dublin
But not nearly hard enough
There are things in flight forgotten
But none of them is love
There’s only one above me
And a thousand lights below
And Boston sparkles pretty
When there’s nowhere else to go

Boston sparkles pretty
As pretty as her face
It’s just the kind of city
Where a loser finds his place
And Boston sparkles pretty
As pretty as her eyes
It’s the kind of place
A drowning heart will rise

She’ll be waking in Cordoba
On her way to by his side
If the truth of her “Goodbye love”
Saw the “Please stay” that I lied
And the Queen of Hearts is bleeding
But she will not let it show
And Boston sparkles pretty
When there’s nowhere else to go

Boston sparkles pretty...

I’m crossing the Charles River now
In the early morning sun
With a rhyme in every footstep
Like I’m going to meet someone
And I know that she’ll be waiting
We made a promise long ago
And Boston sparkles pretty
When there’s nowhere else to go

Boston sparkles pretty...

Descending into an Irish Hades
You have such a knack to right stuff that seemed lived forever in the folk catalog. It's as if you are connected to some timeless Zeitgeist (oxymoron?) that breathes thru us all, like Teilhard de Chardin's noosphere. You are an Orpheus of Folk, I can imagine you descending into Hades and bringing back the dead pantheon of other great songwriters. The violin cries, never shines, contains all the weight that the lyrics hint at, all the exhaustion and loss. It's Irish sensitivity is a perfect complement to the song's concept. I'd have maybe dropped it out for a few lines in the final chorus, until it could come back in for its final notes.
Fab track. Excellent.

hey tom. i should have got an email alert about this....macjams is rubbish. the violin is sublime....those that hate it have no soul. fantastic song tom....and the lyrics are stupendous....although i'm sure you'll be upsetting a lot of people who live in boston....unless you're talking about boston lincs...in which case i'm sure everyone's going to be in agreeement. seriously stupendous poetic lyrics.

Up for a holiday?
I could swear you'd been playing the bars over Martha's Vineyard or the islands below New England. You'd certainly fit-in and have a great paid "working vacation" (holiday) out there. Not sure about Boston, I'll take your word for those sparkles. Beautiful. And if there's some contention about the violin, maybe it comes from some contingent of people you know off-site? BTW it's all mixed fine, even the violin's tucked-in nicely.

What a great mix! Seriously, I think you're one of my favorite Mac-Jammers (and I've only listened to two songs so far.......) I love your style.... Great lyrics, too. Can't wait to check out the rest of your music....
