Stand Tall (by jdholliday)

Description
I actually don't have any songwriting credits on Stand Tall, the lyrics and music were written by James (jdholliday).

After we worked on the song, he was way too kind asking me to post
here.

I first heard Stand Tall in an acoustic guitar/vocal version, which already sounded wonderful. From there, James suggested doing an orchestral version, which is the result you can hear.

James plays the acoustic and lead guitars, bass, and assumes all vocals. I added
the percussion tracks, piano, flute, oboe, horns and strings as VST/MIDI tracks.

I would like to thank James for giving me this opportunity to work on such a
wonderful song and for being so kind and generous. He's not only a very skilled
musician, but also an extremely kind, easygoing and generous person. It was great
fun and a fantastic experience being part of this project.

Lyrics
STAND TALL
(J. D. Holliday)

I Didn't even ask for your opinion
So why don't you just go away, and leave me alone
You run around town shootin' your mouth off
When you don't even have a clue what you're talking about

So worry about your own life that you're living
And just keep your mouth shut about things you don't know
As for me and my own imperfections
We've suffered more than enough and now we'd like to move on

And I'm gonna stand tall,
I'm gonna break down these walls
I've got far too much to do to have to deal with people like you
look out cause I'm gonna stand tall
I'm gonna break down these walls

Everybody talks about things that they shouldn't
And there's a pretty fine line between gossip and concern
There's so many more things we should be doing
If we could just get our minds on the real task at hand

So you can just stay on that path that you're leading
But you better find somebody else to run into the ground
Cause as for me and my own life's ambitions
We've waited long enough now we'd like to move on

(don't you know I)......
And I'm gonna stand tall,
I'm gonna break down these walls
I've got far too much to do to have to deal with people like you
Look out cause I'm gonna stand tall
I'm gonna stand tall,
I'm gonna break down these walls
I've got far too much to do to have to deal with people like you
Look out cause I'm gonna stand tall
I'm gonna break down these walls!

Impressive
To a solo plucker who can hardly get his head round a simple guitar track and vocals, this production is always going to be an impressive and enjoyable experience. If i might tentatively offer a suggestion, the strings work better on the chorus to my ear, than the verses. The lyrics are quite angry, even bitter, and perhaps require something a bit punchier behind them?

Just tell me to take my very few instruments and not to come back till i can make joined up songs myself!!

Enjoyed it.

Stand tall
I love the percussion boom on this. Gives it what I think is called gravitas. Great vocal from James as always and love the way the orchestration backs off at around 2:00. I'm inclined to agree about the orchestration for the verses being slightly moodier. While it's very very skilled, I'd like something a bit darker to fit the mood of the lyrics although I'd certainly keep what you've got for one of the verses. Perfect use of backing vocals in the second chorus from 3:05- that made me sit up and listen harder and I thought it worked really well. Yves' orchestration is beautiful and delicate where it needs to be and kicks in where it needs to appropriately in a very intelligent way. Well done guys. DL'd. Very different
backer you have made here compared to the original. I have heard this song a bunch of times but your backer here is very well done. I love how you gradually build it up. I like what you did with the strings personally. Great job one this man! And James, love the vocal. Good to hear you using those bass and guitar skills! Enjoyed it. very strong
the vocals are powerful, they are exactly what they need to be. The orchestration is very skillful, though is sometimes gives some phrases a bombastic feel -- which is nobody's fault, it's just the way things meshed. Great job all around, this was excellent.

I'm speachless!
This is one of my most personal songs, I wrote this close to 20 years ago during an extremely difficult time in my life, hearing it here today with Yves orchestration and reading people's comments is very touching, I want to thank Yves who has been absolutely wonderful to work with on 2 songs now, for working so hard and putting out such an unbelievable quality piece, this is such a joy to get to collab with so many talented and wonderful people, somehow posting this on 9/11 even seems somewhat surreal to me. I'm so happy we have all found such a beautiful place to share the gift of music with eachother. Thank you Yves and everyone else here for your kindness and your time in this crazy mixed up world, take care and be blessed friends. Jd.

You know James,
I think that if a song is really good, it is just very easy to do a version that sounds good. Like I was writing on the description, this song blew me away when I heard it with an acoustic guitar only. That's the essence of the thing. Your songwriting is just fantastic and these experiences are great fun and pleasure for me. I have a huge respect for your art and inspiration.

The perfect collaboration!
Wow, guys--this was astonishing! I don't know where to begin to start with the superlatives on this, it's that great. James: Beautifully written song and of course, your delivery here is full of strength and emotion; your part of the score is perfectly matched by Yves truly outstanding contributions (Yves, you have amazed me once again!) I hear music this wonderful on this site and I think of how proud I am to be a member and that I actually know you guys! Bravo to you both--full marks for a magnificent collaborative production. Stand Tall
Strong melody, and the vocals sound great as usual. The orchestration is well done - I like the way the instruments weave in and out.
"Stand Tall" is a good hook, but we never learn what it is the other person did or said that makes this reaction necessary. A bridge section could explain this. From a mix standpoint I found myself wishing for a stronger rhythm section. Also, the acoustic sort of gets lost when the full orchestration kicks in. Maybe some eq sculpting?

You're the best Dani
One of the best rewards I can get is having the support of the folks I admire. You're amongs them Dani and I'm so pleased having your support. Many thanks for taking a moment for listening.

James has something extraordinary. I also admire his singing and I'm amazed by the quantity of great works he is able to produce. If someone told me, 5-6 months ago that I'll have a chance to work along with James, I'd never believe. But now, we worked on 2 songs (and believe me, I intend to do more things) with James and I have collabs going on or will start, with people I would never believe I'd have an opportunity to work with. But this is all happening and I feel extremely privileged and lucky.

Such
Great & effective dynamics. The subtle swelling and backing off works so well and enhances the emotion of the song very well. I think this is one if the hardest things to achieve well in music. Top vocals and backing vocals.
A real crowd pleaser with huge singalong potential.

Generous
Really nice writing, very well sung. There are times the arrangement strays from the country ballad feel and I'm not sure if it helps. Also, there are a few moments the strings interfere with the rhythmic nature of his acoustic groove, landing slightly behind his steady playing. The vocals have too much reverb, in my ears, slightly too roomy. I'd boost the drums volume, too. Well written tune, classic and balanced. Soulfully sung. Thanks for sharing the personal comments about how generous & kind James is, that was nice.

sounds
sounds good to me. everything is played well, some nice guitar bits in there. if it was me, I think I would wait until the "and i'm gonna stand tall" line before I brought in the orchestration (might have extra impact that way), but that's not a slight at all. this sounds great. for some reason it kind of reminds me of the Band. nice job.

It's absolutely no harm as far as I'm concerned, if there are comparisons. On another collab more than one compared to Van Morrison and it was very interesting to hear the song mentioned and indeed, find common points.

I wasn't too familiar with Van Morrison and I have to check Glen Campbell too but either way, be it an artist I know or not, I actually like such comparisons, in my case, it's reassuring to be within a style people recognize (before I get to a point I work out my own, but that's too early). Some artists at MJ did that and it's great.
