Carolina in the Morning

Description
Several months ago I was reading a book entitled, "Meet the Mertzes", all about William Frawley and Vivian Vance, who, of course, played Ricky and Lucy's next door neighbors on "I Love Lucy" (they hated each other). I was semi-stunned to find that Hollywood fashion plate William Frawley introduced this thing in "The Passing Show of 1922" (I think most theatergoers passed on it). Anyway, here's my version. Thanks again and see you all next year! Michael

"Carolina in the Morning" was written in 1922 by Gus Kahn and Walter Donaldson and is in the public domain.

Arrangement/accompaniment: Courtesy Bob Boyd Productions (2007)
Backup Singers: The Strep Sisters
Vocal: MJK
Featured Artwork: The lovely William Frawly as "Fred Mertz" (or as Ricky pronounced it, "Frat Merss"), and ladies, don't you just love how he's poured into those Sans-a-Beltâ„¢ slacks?

I always love the music. But the little history lessons you provide in the descriptions are also very entertaining. Nice post Michael.

Thank you...
... thank you, for another walk through the hall of great old classics (sometimes I sing this song out of nowhere while walking or driving... go figure) . What a bit of history. Imagine, Fred sang this? Heheh. Loved that show and Frawley was a the comedic anchor on that show. When he came into the camera's view, you knew gold was about to come forth!

Thanks Michael. I love the history and especially you rendition.

Thanks Jack!
I know I've heard Frawley singing on "I Love Lucy" and actually caught an old "soundie" of him singing something from back in the 1930s and while he was no Perry Coma or anything, he wasn't bad really! Oh he was a pro on the set, even though he had a drinking problem, and you're right, he was the "solid" one on the show. Getting set for 12-16" of snow starting tomorrow (so far, winter ain't looking so good out here!) Appreciated hearing from you--take good care now! Michael

Show tune voice
Man, your voice is just like the radio shows and bandstand singers. This song has it all. Purrr-fecto. You got it like that.

Thanks for the dl :)

Hi Michael, sounds like the real deal again to me. My old man was a Dean Martin fan and i remember his version ringing around the place as one of my first memories. Could definitely have been worse!

Love the asides, had me laughing!

Hi Marc
Yanno, I never get time to sit around and listen to the guys I grew up listening to, like Dino, Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Sammy, Vic Damone Frankie Laine, etc, but I've found a wonderful site called "Pandora" and now while I'm at work, I have them all singing to me again and it's wonderful! My mom was THE Dean Martin fan of all time, and I remember as a child, curled up in her lap while she watched his TV show--there was a man who had such style and wit, and he made it all look so easy (it wasn't though!) Thanks for checking into this deal and for sharing your memories. You take good care now! Michael

I have to chuckle, because oftentimes when I'm performing these deals, I act out the "part", and much to the detriment of the recordings because my head moves all over the place and what have you---can't help it though! Thanks so very much for the kind words and the listen--keep up the great work you are doing and I wish you and yours the very best this season. Michael

Is this not
the one made famous by Mr Al Jolson and his totally non PC Black Face Minstrel Act? Which I thought was brilliant by the way...cos I was too young to realise that thirty or so years later some twisted minds would make a perfectly innocent piece ofschtick to be as evil as they try to make it out to be God it maayyyykes me soooooo MMMaaaDDDDDD....I used to play this on me uke, when I was a kid

Nice job

Jolie
Chris, I've mentioned this elsewhere here, but believe it or not, my partner's father's first and middle name is "Al Jolson". Now this is very peculiar, because when I was a kid, I sought out every Jolson movie that came on. He may seem old hat and politically incorrect when he did the black face (but yanno, those were the times, that's how it was and you can't take back history) but my father told me about the time he saw Jolson on stage and he said the effect was electrifying. I believed him. Thanks for stopping by and checking out this latest mess-terpiece! You take good care now and keep strummin'! Michael

The Strep Singers
Hahahahahhahahaaha. Aw, shit. Man. Keep 'em coming, Michael. Love that growling "Morning" at 1:15. Great touch. I'm not exactly a morning person myself. What a performance. You make it sound so easy. Love the Mertzes. I understand that Frawley was quite difficult on the set, and that he had a particular animosity towards Lucy and Viv. Well, you would never know. Those four worked together like a well-oiled machine, thanks to Ricky evidently. Another great post. Thanks for the historical snippets.

The Strep Sisters
Hi Reggie. You know, one of them went on to marry Junior Samples when she was around 13. I'm not sure how long it lasted though. Well, the inference I got from the book that really, Vivian Vance was the most caustic one (she had psychological issues and foremost, she was bitchy from the start because she was some 22 years younger than Frawley and wound up playing his wife--you get the idea!) Lucy was no bargain to work with either--very demanding, a perfectionist, but hey, it paid off. Desi was the glue that held the whole show together and he was very well liked by everyone (quite a job he had!) Thanks again Reggie--you take care now! Michael

Strep SISTERS, not singers. All the better. Hahahahaha. Damn. Thanks for the clarification on the Viv/Bill conflict. Makes sense. Didn't know she had inherent issues.

Oh god Impsie, I look in the mirror and and I have to poke my reflection in the eyes to be sure it's not some guy behind a hole in the wall wearing a very pale imitation "Michael Jay Klein" mask. Just horrifying I tell's you! Oh, I'm getting "O Holy Night" all readied up, so be prepared! Thanks you! No more curtains for you this fiscal quarter, okay? xox

I missed that one...
although back in my youth, there was a fellow who played in the same piano lounge as me and taught me this tune called "(Ethnic of your Choice) Wash Woman on the Rag Blues" that I still sit down and play now and then--it's the kind of song you perform that gets everybody in the room to shut up, yanno? Thanks again Peter--you have a fab weekend! Michael

I love the history of these songs that you provide. I heard many of them as a child, but have no idea where for some of them. I didn't know Frawley could sing a note based on his gruff voice.
