Lyrics
Have You Ever Been To Port-au-Prince?
Copyright Stan Loh, January 28, 2010.
This song was written for the orphans of Haiti after a terrible earthquake on January 12, 2010.

VERSE 1
Have you ever been to Port-au-Prince?
Where the earth stomped out a deadly dance,
Everything crumbled, your palace gone,
I heard the moaning, till the early dawn,
Have you ever been to Port-au-Prince?

Chorus
"Mama, Mama where can you be?
Where is my Papa, where can he be?
Mama, Mama why can’t I see?
Why can’t you call back to me… call back to me?”

VERSE 2
You had twelve months to clear the streets,
Where did the money go, why plastic sheets?
Have they gone to pockets deep unknown?
What are your reasons, what have you shown?
Have you ever lived in self-defeat?
Repeat Chorus

VERSE 3
These shelters of plastic will be my vote,
I cry for better, but the dark death showed,
And the streets ain’t streets, all rubbled stone,
Lost children crying on their own,
Have you ever tasted bloated goats…bloated goats,
Repeat Chorus

Outro
“Oh Mama, Mama please care for me,
I need your love, oh can't you see?
Every morning I beg for food,
The scraps I get just ain’t no good ...ain’t no good,
Ain’t no good ...ain’t no good.”

Harrowing
Beautifully supported with very effective and different harmonies, and nice harmonica, too.

The subject is a bit raw for me, just imagining the things you evoke i can't take in, can't cope with even visualising it.

Just can't take tragedy these days for some reason, got to live in a dream world, a musical nether space. Some would call it being close to God, some would call it self-delusion, but i hide in its embrace, and shelter there against the terrors of the world.

Good song, all the same, but i flee from it.

Sorry to put a thorn in your Sunday! But we need to tell on people who have not done what they're supposed to.

Thanks for the frankness, and your eventual approval.

Very good!
The harmonica and background singing really add to your empathetic message. World can always use more songs that cry out about injustice and corruption.

Thank you, Bronco
Glad you like my wet harp! I've never learned to play it another way...but then I'm still a newbie with that instrument.

Thanks for the listen.

Poignant...
Hi Stan. Poignant lyrics underpin this heartfelt song. You have done a very good job capturing the dispair that Haiti must have endured. I know that our New Zealand neighbours are suffering terribly due to Christchurch's earthquake but at least they are a developed country and are in a position to help themselves. Haiti is a very different situation. Thanks for highlighting the plight of these people. Warm regards, Peter.

Thanks Peter
...for your very warm words. I've done a couple more similar songs that challenge the onlookers. I write about the plight of the homeless, the runaways, etc.

Thanks for listening to my message.

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO PORT-AU-PRINCE
Singing the chorus from the perspective of a parentless child is particularly powerful. I like the activist themes of verses 2 and 3. The harmonica is a wonderful touch. It really adds to the sullen mood of the song.

I love when people really say something important with their music.

I've yet to learn
...the names of people in this site. Soon, I hope. Thank you so much for this wonderful remark. You encourage me a lot.

Originally I wanted a child to sing the Chorus. Alas, I'm too impatient and can't wait ...hopefully one day I will get my grand-daughter to sing this (she's 5 and can carry a pretty good tune).

Thanks so much!

An excellent
tribute (if that's the word) to the long suffering people of Haiti.... excellent poetry with very touching words and so sympathetically sung and played.... it's quite beautiful in it's sadness, regards M

Hi Moviz
Thank you for your response. What's happening (not happening, is a better phrase) is sickening. I wonder who is sitting on the money, and why the donors are not kicking up a fuss...our Canadian government used our dollars to help, but nothing has happened.
