Mabel (live, around 1971 +/-)

Get Flash to see this player.

Another trip back about 40 years. The teenagers from Minneapolis are playing somewhere in western Minnesota.

This original song gave us the opportunity to feature solos by all the band members. Don't know who Mabel was that gave us the idea for the lyrics... maybe it was some stupid western we watched in some cheesy motel we stayed at while out on the road.

1st generation Deep Purple comes to the American midwest! I love the jam session element of this. And those guitar sounds are to die for. Very Blackmore!

I would do a bit of mastering on this. The bass seems a bit woofy. A high pass filter could minimize that. Or maybe a multiband compressor.

But considering the age of the master tape, this stuff is sweet.

Very Blackmore
Yes, I forgot to mention Deep Purp in my list of influences, especially in our earlier years. Yes, the mix stinks - it done with a crude feed off the pa and a couple of stage mics at a live gig. These recoding went from reel to reel to cassette then to CD, so the dynamics stink, fidelity is questionable. You should see what this stuff looks like on a frequency analyzer.... bottom end is over-saturated, and there is a 30dB notch between 10.5-11.5kHz due to tape head alignment and improper tape bias setup.

Yes, I will clean it up. I was just making certain that we wouldn't get tossed of of MacJams before I startedI use Logic Pro, Samplitude (from Germany), and Adobe Soundbooth in my studio, and actually do a lot of fixing bad audio tracks (mostly for some of the commercial video houses for whom I do editing).

My son-in-law has his Masters in Performance Percussion and in education and is the music director at a local high school. They are running out of funding for music, band, orchestra, choir, etc but have plenty of money for football. We were thinking of trying to put together a collection of original tunes from various artists as a fundraiser for Music Education... you have enough great tunes to put together your own album. I LOVE your work and have listened to it since you started posting here.

Vocalist so great & powerful
The vocalist on this cut is my baby brother... probably 16 or 17 at the time. Several years later he formed a very successful band in Minneapolis and his manager had him get voice coaching- it was even better. Oner of our vocalists, who I thought had an incredible amount of power, ended up, I have been told, with cancer of the larynx. Smoking and powerful singing... not a good combo.

Our inspiration was we were doing something we loved, and making a few $$$. We were featured on radio and TV shows, and just had a great time. People (except for a few jealous boyfriends and a husband or two) loved us. THATS inspiration.
