Rain Time

 Genre: Film Scoring

Get Flash to see this player.

Well this was a surprise; I was checking out the sound effects supplied with my copy of GarageBand, and when I heard the rain the beginnings of this tune popped into my head. I expected it to take ages to finish but no, even the dreaded Obsessive Compulsive Tweak Disorder didn't interfere. OK, later on OCTD did arrive and I did a few tweaks, hence this version. The only changes now will come if I can get an actual pianist to play this and give it some more feeling.

If I get the chance to make the movie this track would be laid over a scene portraying a family and friends at a child's funeral. No dialogue would be recorded, the conversation would clearly be taking place but the camera and microphone would remain at a distance and the only sound would be a rainstorm and the music.

This is the third version of the track as I did decide to alter it after getting some feedback on another web site, then I tried a tiny tweak of my own and liked it. Please comment if you think you have a suggestion that may improve this track, or of course if you just like it as it is.

Rain time
Don't you just love Garageband - an endlessly fascinating piece of software! But back to the music - I can see the picture you paint, and the melody (which certainly does shift around a bit) is delightfully peaceful. Clear, clean mix. Much enjoyed!

Scene Maker
Yes my friend based on the scene you are portraying here i see a tremendous opportunity for visuals that will definitely move the film forward into and serve as a 'plot pont' for whatever the story will be. Wonderful imagination for filming and visuals through sound. Dig it much!

I like
it very much. I could also see a person writing a letter of goodbye while staring out a window at a dreary day. I know nothing but maybe, the sound of footsteps leading away to match up with the party leaving the grave and even a church bell tolling...at the end...?

Beautiful melody

At first I liked the occasional drop that sounds "closer" or like it's a leaky faucet, clear and loud. I hadn't heard that in a rain effect before, but then when I heard what the intended scene is, it doesn't seem to fit with the loud drops, and I think it would be distracting.

Also, I would consider slowing the piece down to give space to the somber tone of the scene, but because I don't the exact scene or what it transitions from or to, well, then I'm not completely sure - maybe this speed is best. You would know better.

Thanks for the detailed consideration.
I think the pacing is about right, but yes I will remove the extra sound effects if they don't fit the final version of the scene. The script is still slightly fluid so some details may change anyway. Out of interest I will listen to this at different tempo settings to see how it hits me.

A lovely ambient piece!
I used to have the same disorder but now I just write with one take. If I carried on, not one piece would be finished and my head couldn't take that!
Well done on the scene setting, it works well!

Very cool piece
I love the slow and steady left hand, while the right hand has that playful melody.
Really like the rain sound, adds a lot of somber or contemplative ambiance.
Thanks for posting

Rain Time -
Rain - that's something we don't see much of in the UK.

I enjoyed this relaxing and atmospheric piece.

very sweet
I really like the little theme you have going here and the atmosphere you have created. A couple of suggestions for further development - perhaps have the rain fade in and out at the beginning and end of the piece only, and not have it during the entire song. Also, maybe have a different instrument pick up the melody after the piano plays it a couple of times and have the piano play some harmony or a counter-melody. I think this would also sound really nice with some soft, low strings supporting everything.

But...it's also beautiful as is, with a minimalistic feel that really adds to the somber scene you've described. Nice work.
