Dark Eyes

Description
This is the first tune I've recorded in many months. I didn't like it that much to start with. But after getting more creative with the bass line and sprucing up some of the guitar parts, it started to feel better. The vocals helped.

This is a public domain tune. I found the lyrics translation on wiki, then re-wrote them. It's kind of an aerobic tune to sing. I really started to get into it, though. I might just redo this to play with the singing part!

Thanks for stopping by!
Doug

Lyrics
When I see your eyes, your dark and burning eyes
I see your passion and expansive beauty lies
And how I love you now, but also fear you how
You took my heart from me, I can't forget you now

Dark and flaming eyes, open up the skies
You send me far away, the way they hypnotize
Where my true love reigns, where I break my chains
And no sacrifice, only peace remains

When I see your eyes, your dark and burning eyes
I see your passion and expansive beauty lies
And how I love you now, but also fear you how
You took my heart from me, I can't forget you now

But if we hadn't met, I know I wouldn't get
This painful yearning sense, it's you I can't forget
You've ruined me, dark eyes, with warmth your blanket gaze
You take my happiness, leaving your fire blaze

When I see your eyes, your dark and burning eyes
I see your passion and expansive beauty lies
And how I love you now, but also fear you how
You took my heart from me, I can't forget you now

There's a cool Zappa quality to your vocal. And all the distorted guitar lines just make the Frank vibe even more pronounced. Nice mix too!

This won't be the first time you've heard this...
...but there's a real Lou Reed-ness to you vocal approach. it's an interesting idea, translating and adapting a public domain tune from another language. cool work, Doug.

Those fuzzy guitars provide a good backdrop to the soulful vocal. There's a sort of hypnotic effect from the guitar solo. Intriguing lyrics. Much enjoyed!

Howdy Bill!
Yes, I was able to segment the vocals in two sections, first before the guitar solo, then second is after. There were many takes each time. Some were breathing issues, others were phrasing issues. None the less, it was a good time. I stopped when I was still having fun. ;)

Like that opening bass/percussion...
...Really caught my attention in a very good way. I also like the general quality of your vocal delivery. It's not much of a melody, but you give it some real warmth and direction that is sort of mesmerizing. (Maybe that was the original writer's intention.). To my ears, the vocal could come up a few notches in your recording. I'm losing it in the instrumental arrangement. That'd be my only suggestion for a redo of the mix. Enjoyed this very much, Doug.
(I wonder what a sort-of Gypsy-style solo violin would do as an obligato later in the number? just a thought.)

Funny you mention the fiddle. I first heard this melody on an album I picked up years ago... Oscar Peterson and Itzhak Perlman collab. What a great mix. They generally worked through jazzy old standards, if I remember correctly.

It would be a nice facet!

Very cool
That guitar part at about 1:40 is killer.
Great passion in the vocals.
That bass line is very cool as well.
I listened a couple times.
A shorty but goody.

That is the fourth iteration of that solo. Patience paid. Funny, I'm getting a bit more selective with those things as time goes on. Thanks!

a sort of South American feel with the melody Doug .....it would also sound good with a tango rhythm.........and your voice is sounding good as well as the guitars.... nicely constructed song, cheers M

I'd love to mix it up a bit. Maybe I'll track down a drummer. I used perc loops on this. It's quicker. Thank you for your comments.

Hi Doug. Can hear what you mean about the aerobic nature of the tune. Did you take a breath? Really like your vocal work in this. Gravelly but soulful. Like the backer and the guitar work, too. Good post! Nothing not to like about this. Thanks, Peter.

Eyes
dark eyes, dark song (in a good way, of course). got a spooky back context that gives the song character, i feel.
you do have a cool tone to your voice, but the vocs do sound a little rushed in spots, like you weren't completely comfortable yet.

Hee hee
You caught me! I was just telling a friend, yesterday, that the vocals need work but... life is short...

I had one other song where I had to warm up to the phrasing and I managed it quite well. If I redo this one, I'll probably revamp the whole thing and bring in a drummer so I can vary the beat.

Thanks for the comment!

Wow!
Kind of a cross between a 60's psychedelic guitar sound and a passionate pop vocal. Works for me. Love the feel of this one. It makes me want to creep along some dark hallways late at night. Nice one Mr. Doug.
