Prelude to Battle

 Genre: Film Scoring
This Song Temporarily Offline
The title says it all, at least where the music is concerned; I couldn't help thinking that it's not a bad composition for a beginner to writing music. This was written partly as a test of the Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra, a free soundfont download and a substantial one. Highly recommended if you have GarageBand and no Jam Pack Symphony Orchestra, it provides almost everything you will need to produce a reasonable imitation of a modern orchestra. The soundfonts are in SFZ format which GarageBand cannot read, but the free plug in called Alchemy Player can read them.

As a bonus, as well as the ability to play samples and soundfonts straight-through, Alchemy Player is a fantastic synthesiser that can transform the sounds in a massive number of ways. I'm not currently using this capability as I have plenty of synths available already, but it doesn't hurt to have it there just in case. If you want even more capability in a highly programmable synthesiser there's a paid-for version called Alchemy; by all accounts it's fantastic and highly addictive for synthesiser enthusiasts.

Prelude to Battle
This does not sound like the work of a beginner. Strong composition and orchestration. The sounds are quite realistic.

your orchestral sounds are great and your arrangement is fitting to the title.

Enjoyed - Thanks for sharing,

I enjoyed this.
Has a barbaric quality that at time reminds me of Italian epic scores from the fifties.
Well done.

Jason and the Argonauts
This reminds me of the music for the Harryhausen version of Jason. If you can find a copy you'll hear what I mean. So, a very convincing soundtrack piece, and not at all beginnerish.

Prelude to Battle
i think this is the first song of yours i've heard - do you really consider yourself a beginner in writing music? this is very sophisticated sounding, really good use of tension. i use the miroslav philharmonic software - it's not free, but very reasonable for the great sounds. the sonatina symphonic sounds really good though - fine work!

Thanks to you and all the others who've commented here!
I got a copy of GarageBand and my Mac about three weeks before I joined here, and had never written a tune before then. I've thought I wanted to write music for years and years, but never got around to doing anything about it. I'm having fun listening on MacJams and it's part of the learning process to just write and see what I can do. I'll keep Miroslav in mind for when I have some money - sometime around August or September at the rate things are going...

Great Movie sound work!
Fire Angel,

You really know how to use the g/band files loops and more. Good ear for sound and nicely put together. Arrangement has been structured well using synth and various instruments. Good tune, Mate.

Drums of war
Nice capture of the feeling of foreboding. It's great that after all these years you finally went ahead and started composing. You have a good sense for tone and atmosphere.

I can certainly imagine columns of troops marching by as conflict mounts. What happens next? Maybe your next piece will let us know....

not beginner's luck but rather some pent up talent that couldn't help but explode into light of day. You did great. Thanks.
