Guitars + Drums by Lachlan Stewart
Everything else by me

The characters in this song have just gone through something big together, and this song is about the aftermath. It's a camera lens view of an after-party, the party to celebrate the end of something. And it's about that precipice, the in-between before the next big thing and after the last big thing.

I guess there's this mixed feeling of nostalgia, surprise and relief that the previous chapter is over, and also a feeling of uncertainty, because the next chapter might completely change your life. Will you ever see these people again? Will you ever wear the same clothes again? In the same place? And you're in this moment but you know that the future will come, inevitably. So it's a mix of all of these emotions.

I've played with language and its interaction with music a lot here, there's quite a bit to think about if you think about it deeply, but i guess you don't have to think about it deeply just to enjoy it as a normal pop rock song!

A BIT OF LYRICAL ANALYSIS:

There is a lot of language play in the song. some words/phrases can mean two or more things ("records", "tables", "ensembles", "this", "take your jacket across the room"), like Schrödinger's Cat where you don't know what it is until you open the box. That's how the characters of the song might feel about the future.

There is also a shifting of metaphors, outdoor, cosmic metaphors when they're outside, and indoor, biological metaphors when they're inside.

There's a lot of inter-referentiality between the lyrics and music, with the "impulses" being reflected by the drums, the "echo in the groove" followed by echo-effected guitars. The melody of "one day soon" and "echo in the groove" are repeated throughout the song in the bass; so it's like the bass is continuously echoing the "one day soon". There's also the cut-up "qu-iet".

"here", The hanging minute is said at around the final minute of the song.

The last verse seems to be both a conversation between the characters, or the singer talking to the listener of the song. The sound of the crowd at the ending is actually in reverse, as if the party was being rewinded.

Lyrics
satellite, crossing over
left our weeks in its wake
records spilled on the deskdrawer
packing still, we're the last to leave

it is time, but time, we'll take now
a quiet reeling, a paused ballet
these frames are set to play, these frames are set to play
the orbit's circled put ourselves and all these tables
back inside, inside

we stand now, pivot loaded
both squinting through the black
have you made your cut decision?
after the aftermath

one day, soon
impulses strung together
an echo in the groove

will my nerves wait with me
to route again this gesturing
will they fire up again
in the same way?

fold these calendars, conversations
take your jacket across the room
the last of our ensembles
superposed, a gasp and sigh

Here we are the hanging minute
carry all of this with you
if it's all the same to you
someday, play this back for me?

All of This
Strong songwriting. Love the lyrics. I love when writers use a lot of words and phrases with multiple meanings. It really creates room for the listeners perspective and life experience to define the meaning. Nice arrangement. Digging the guitars. I'm a big fan of well placed tremolo effects.

I like
your voice very much. You have a bit of country in your style of singing. You put a lot of thought into this. Thanks.
