The Ballad of the Golden Boy

This was a really hard song to write and record. On 19th February 2014 my dog, Boru, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. For us, this was a shattering and life changing experience. Without children, I guess Boru and our other dog Sraotha, became the focus of our life.
For over 10 years Boru was at my side, travelling on holidays, even as far as our native Ireland, taking long strolls on beaches and in forests. He would greet me when I got home and say hi to me in the mornings. Whenever I was stressed, tired or fed up with the rat race, he would be there at home, waiting with a big hairy hug.
Dogs get under your skin, they become a part of you, part of the family. They are more than just beasts of convenience; they provide emotional and physical support in many circumstances.
Having Boru got me through some very dark times indeed. I don't want to dwell on the exact nature of this, but I have had my moments of sheer and utter hopelessness. That golden boy was sometimes the only thing that kept me sane, kept me here.
I figured I should do something special for him, so I spent a week putting together a piano piece to tie the whole thing together. This was so tough, I can barely get my fingers in the right places and some of it is edited at note level due to my poor timing. I will learn to play it through though!
I wrote this song in tribute to Boru, my Glen of Imaal terrier. The greatest dog that ever lived. My ray of sunshine. I miss you mate.

Dog not gone!
So they don't go anywhere, in spirit our Komondor Alto still follows my wife around the house. Loss makes the present valuable. Thanks for sharing your tune.

Golden Tears
As if the loss of your mate wasn’t heartbreaking enough, you go and write a sad song on top of it. So sorry man. We lost one of my least favorite dogs last year and it totally stunk.

Good to hear something new from you, even though it’s a tear jerker.

Thanks for the download!

if we could only be half the men
our dogs believe us to be - what a world we'd be living in. Luckily we get to taste that world through their faithful companionship. So sorry for your loss. This is a beautiful tribute to Boru.

Songs about pets and songs about god are best written about girls. I like this dude. I was expecting cheese, I admit it. But this is really good. I like the production a lot. Even your hinky piano playing lol. It's a pretty song, and there's a lot to be said for writing a pretty song.

I grew up in the 70's and 80's in the south of the UK in an Irish family. I had always loved music but was never given an opportunity to explore making it for myself. About 10 years ago I bought an acoustic guitar and began strumming in earnest. To d... [see more]
