When A Knight Won His Spurs

Get Flash to see this player.

An old song we used to sing at school, well not actually that old though as it was written 1931 then arranged by Vaughn Williams it was then covered by Martin Simpson in 2008

When a knight won his spurs, in the stories of old,
He was gentle and brave, he was gallant and bold
With a shield on his arm and a lance in his hand,
For God and for valour he rode through the land.

No charger have I, and no sword by my side,
Yet still to adventure and battle I ride,
Though back into storyland giants have fled,
And the knights are no more and the dragons are dead.

Let faith be my shield and let joy be my steed
'Gainst the dragons of anger, the ogres of greed;
And let me set free with the sword of my youth,
From the castle of darkness, the power of the truth.

A new Paddler - after so long! Feels very much as in the 60:es when a new Beatles song was out.

Wonderful piece! Abrupt ending of the song but it is at least a real genuine Paddler.

There is toooo little Paddler music in this world.

BTW. How are you these days?

My good friend
lol - i been hiding in the woods for a very long time! I quite happy just eating fish and busking accordian.I still aint found love, but er have loved loads of times.Your guitar still active? I had a nightmare last week when two strings snapped - so i hooked up a g string to and e string,a dstring to an e string,an A sring to hell and then I couldnt get it in tune - i'm no guitar expert.i have a friend who makes guitars from scratch - i'd like to see what he thinks of my guitar - i brought it 10 years ago from a junk shop.the strings are so hard on it - i practise songs but then my fingers become to numb to play and i should practise more often! I'm fine been reading huckleberry finn as usual and floating down the river.my man - how are you! I am a slow burner.I did have your CD - but apparently no-one has CD player anymore.CAN I GET YOUR ALBUM ON VINYL?? just joking ... rich

Great to hear
I am impressed by your abilty to live in wildernes. I mean, Britain is cold .. especially half of the year .. isn't it?

And yes .. I'd love get music out on vinyl. Recorded with a reel tape-recorder. It was so much more real. I had a Revox A77 in the early 70:s A reel recorder that made real sounding recordings.

And .. concerning guitars .. I finally got my dream one. A Martin D-18. The model they began crafting 2012. (They finally updated them with scalloped bracing, and forward shifted). Its go no fancy embellishments, look unbelivable simple and is a queen of guitars. What a tone. It's made of love.

I am blessed to play in a few different constellations with really good singers. Not so many gigs, maybe ten or twelv a year. Trying to make it as good a quality as possible instead. I'm also engaged as a guitar teacher for the staff of a architect consulting firm in a city nearby. They play guitar with me at lunch time.

Wish you the best my friend! So glad to hear from you and listen to you new recordings!

wilderness..not quite
- i'd like to tell you i survive my catching my own fish but nah - theres a supermarket on the other side of the lake.I guess the challenging bit is not going blind from ticks, remembering to put wood aside incase it rains (which it does alot in the lake district - hence the lakes) . I also confess I don't know anything about handcrafted guitars, but one of the guitar teachers at the school I work at was tellling me all about a jim olson signature guitar.I have no idea what the significance of that is but theres a video of him playing it anyway.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0eOMPHtJ80 Good to hear from you - i'll read that email you sent too.RG

you are welcome
thank you - Its a yamaha recorder i found neglected in a store cupboard - I like nature but I have to confess I also used it to scare off a bird that had a really irritating call that just repeats over and over till it drives you up the wall. Its only a little bird and I know it was just getting on with the buisness of mating but - ya know, thats life - it had plenty of other acres of forest to find a mate

Of knights errant
A good one Rich, with most appropriate recorder embellishments. Overdubbing vocals sound great too. My kind of folk tune! Many thanks.

thank you doug
dunno if I do just a tad too much overdubbing of vocals, sometimes wander if I should just leave as a single vocal track, its kind of a habit ive got into.glad you appreciated it anyway!

I think it's an artistic choice and it works particularly well - to my ears - with certain kinds of traditional folk songs that have an English origin. The prime example I can think of is Jethro Tull's Songs from the Wood, but there are others too. Anyway, I think it was the perfect choice here to overdub!
