This Empire's State

Description
Another post-Brexit song. A bit rough but I just wanted to finish it.

There’s a nasty undercurrent of racism and intolerance that’s been released by this damn vote.

A while back I saw a video of a right-wing thug abusing a group of peaceful protesters. The level of hate and vitriol in his voice was frightening. What are they so scared of?

He was sweating profusely and I had an image of his tattoo of The Queen looking like she was crying.

Music and lyrics by me and Richard Marris (who came up with the "empire's state" line).

Guitars : Richard and me
Drums: Anders (a drummer in Logic – the first time I’ve tried using one)
Everything else : me

This Empire's State © 2017 Langford/Marris

He's angry when he wakes up and goes to bed the same
Doesn't want to understand, just wants someone to blame
Doesn't like to think too much and believes just what he's told
It's easier that way he's found to buy whatever's sold

Sweat drips down his tattooed queen is crying
Intimidation, he's not even even trying
Learned to hate at his father's knee
Only one way he was ever going to be

He's heavy with the weight of expectation
Of twisted hopes from previous generations
Who thought that they were going to save our nation
But from who?

It's quite a trek to Tipperary and he doesn't know the way
But just a short step to the Old Kent Road, that's where he wants to stay
Let's all do the Lambeth Walk, it's what made our Empire great
Let's not look too closely at this Empire's state

He's used by the rich to blame it on the poor
He knows what he's against but what's he in it for?
Learned to hate at his father's knee
Only one way he was ever going to be

Rocking smack at the cultural enemy!
Enjoyed this rocking tune. The lyric doesn't do anything for me, except the part where your making fun of the people with whom you disagree...
Why these reprobates seem to be ignorant, self absorbed, haters.
I bet they wear the wrong hat or something too.
Seriously great production and great riffs. The tag at the end featuring the dissonance really caught my ear, of course I thought that bit was inspired production.
Dick you hold the standards so high! Thank you for continuing to share your wonderful tunes with us here.

High praise.

People aren't born racist or prejudiced, they have to learn it. Unfortunately that "education" (or lack of it) is perpetuated in every generation until it becomes an accepted response to the world.

Thanks for the listen and the comments. The dissonance was my frustration at feeling helpless.

Thanks again

Love that fuzzy guitar tone counterbalanced by a clear, clean vocal. Powerful arrangement.

Brexit does seem to be about people clinging to something that they hope is there but isn't. Meanwhile, I wake up to the news of the two thin-skinned thirteen-year-old rulers threatening each other - one with “fire and fury like the world has never seen” in response to the other's plan being formulated "to attack the US military base on the Pacific island of Guam". Can they be serious? I hope things don't get worse before they get better.

Anyway, great song, Dick.

Fire and fury?
I picked up on that this morning. The most frightening thing was seeing him with crossed arms looking like a spoilt child refusing to go to bed not someone firing the opening salvos of WWIII. As you said, can they be serious? I hope not.

I don't think I know what Brexit is about any more. It's been hijacked by the far right and those that voted to leave are simply accepting whatever happens despite the damage it's going to do to their own finances beacause they have developed such a hatred of the EU after years of right wing propaganda.

We live in interesting times but I'd rather be bored.

Thanks for the listen, comment and thoughts.

Cheers

Dick

i like it rough
even though the lyrics may be a bummer situation, the song does have a upbeat sound and full of energy. perfect for a cool rock feel. i'm not sure what you did at the very end but it sounded very cool.

It started out differently
I did the initial track as a slower, simple acoustic but after Richard had added the rhythm guitar I dropped the acoustic completely.

As I said to Daug the ending was a bit of frustration.

Thanks for the listen and comments Vic.

I got a 60's "Them" vibe from the guitar work. Perfect choice for the working class rage against progress narrative. Some very pithy lines in there... There's probably always been a group of disenfranchised people since some guy turned up with a bronze arrowhead during the Stone Age :-) Great song. Thanks

Very possibly Them
We didn't really have any specific ideas for the backing but I really liked the raw guitar sound so ended up working from that.

Bronze arrow head! I like that. Prejudice has always been with us and always will be. Education is the key but sadly it seems to be a lack of it that perpetuates the problem.

Thanks for the listen and comments.

Thanks Micheal,
Richard did most of the guitar on this one so I'm sure he'll be pleased.

Thanks for the comments on the singing. I think I changed the melody almost every time I tried a take!

In
a way, I could hear The Who doing this in their early years. Just has that sort of vibe to me. Then it really brought that thought home when I heard the ending. Fine tunage.

Another great commentary
The fuzzy guitars really suit this kind of song so well...
Love the dissonance at the end and wish there was more throughout the song. The piece is mostly a recitative-style of vocal delivery... I really appreciate being able to understand the lyrics, too. You've kept the band sufficiently at bay so they don't obscure the words. ... Are you sure you're not writing about us? (US) ... the similarities in the culture of hate are frightening.

It could be about any number of places unfortunately.

I'm pleased you're picking upon the lyrics as they were what originally drove it.

We live in difficult times but hope for a better future.

Great thoughts here
what the &^%$ is happening, are we all going crazy?
I fear the psychopaths are boiling to the surface as they did in the 1930's.
Thanks for expressing it so well.

I think the world has been gripped by a collective madness. It's almost as if nature has somehow decided it's had enough and is turning the human race in on itself.

Thanks or the listen and comments.

Late to listen
Hi Dik just catching up this morning on several favourite performers I have missed listening to for a while.great angry/frustrated track and the lyrics as ever say it all. I read somewhere any group can define it's civilisation by where it draws the line between "them and us". The line seems very close for a lot of people these days sadly.

Very true.

We always have been a polarised society but Brexit and the likes of the Mail/Express and Sun have seen to it that gap has been more firmly defined.

Interesting tune
I have complicated thoughts about the Trump vote over here. Certainly it brought out fear and hate.

I have one suggestion off the bat, and of course artistic choice trumps my lone ear. The tambourine lead, while a nice addition, was a few notches too loud for me.

My favorite part in the music was where you brought an acoustic riff in at the end. That was a delicious little surprise and I was sad to see it go!

cool, colorful tune

I did wonder about the tambourine.
I thought it was a touch loud when I was mixing but when I played it back on my workaday Mac (not the one I record on) and through earbuds it sounded about right so decided that's probably how people might listen to it so I left it alone.

It's a divide world these days and as I said earlier, it seems like a collective madness has descended on us.

Thanks for taking the time to stop and listen.

Cheers

Dick

leaned to hate
First off Dick, this one is a cracker. The lyrics drive your message so very eloquently, and then your vocal is wonderfully clean and resonant to bring out the topic. As with your other work, this is top drawer measured all round, but in this case I think you efficiently crafted something that says a lot and packs a punch. Thanks for the download.
