I'm Right, You're Wrong (with Hickling-Stan)

Description
In an exchange of messages a while back with Mark (Hickling_Stan) we both said we'd deleted our FB profiles because we were sick of the idiots. He said he had thought about writing a song called I'm Right, You're Wrong about social media

A few days later whilst bashing out some chords I got the words to a first verse with the idea that we'd have a conversation as if on Twitter. Mark came up with the poll idea and a response and it went backwards and forwards from there.

The bridge is a true story about a guy I knew from school. We smoked dope, listened to Trout Mask and were generally your average liberal, lefty, hippy students in the late 60s early 70s. Many years later he contacted me on Facebook and after a few exchanges of views I realised he'd become everything we were against when we were students. Right wing, comfortable and liberal hating. He said I should have left all that left wing student stuff behind years ago and I should grow up. He wasn't a friend on FB very long.

Initially I had an idea to try a Buddy Holly style of strummed guitar but somehow it moved into an almost African sound.
There are a lot of words here so the song is quite long. I've tried to break it up as much as possible.

Me: vocals, lyrics, music
Mark: vocals, lyrics, original concept

I'm Right, You're Wrong © 2019 Langford/Spruce

You're angry at the idiots who don't share your point of view
I wouldn't worry too much as they think the same of you
I'm right, you're wrong that's how it works on Twitter
Spending any time there is going to leave you bitter
Twitter poll, would you rather be a penguin or a chimpanzee?
It's just a bit of fun but answer honestly
I'd be a monkey swinging through the trees
You won't catch me eating fish
Or diving into icy seas

A Twitter poll's never just for fun
I take it seriously
Your animalistic prejudices
Are plain for all to see
I can see where you are going with this
Just get back up in your tree
I’d rather be a penguin
Are you trying to make a monkey out of me?

I'm right, you're wrong
I'm right you're wrong
I'm right you're wrong
I'm right you're wrong

I can't believe your point of view
What planet do you come from?
Of course you won't find common ground
Because I'm right, your wrong.
I'm right you're wrong

I read your social media comments
Anger drives me round the bend
They make me respond with venom
Never stop (to think) before I hit send

Why won't you listen to me, why won't you listen to me?

I thought we were friends once
We shared a joint or two
Listened to Captain Beefheart
but I never knew
it was just a game for you
now you say I should grow-up
Sorry my old-friend you just make me want to throw up

You only hear want you want to hear
You don't really want to learn
If listen to the idiots
You're never going to turn
Stupid is your favourite word
You can't hold a conversation
Your vocabulary's limited
You need some education

How did your views get so extreme?
Did you learn nothing at school?
Unlike me you're uninformed
You speak the words of a fool
Can't you understand
Can't you just try to hear
If I just type louder
Maybe you'll disappear

I'm right, you're wrong
I'm right you're wrong
I'm right you're wrong
I'm right you're wrong

facebook generation
this modern world is all about likes, everyone is his own bubble, staring at that blue window.
I'm not into social media, saw what it does to my students.. Instant satisfaction is what they're after...
Really good song about social media, very much enjoyed.

Blimey, that was fast!
Thanks Cees.

Social media is a true double edged sword. I suppose that in a way MJ is part of social media, allowing folks in different places to communicate and share ideas.

The difference is that it's a closed society (even more these days as no new members can join!) whereas Twitter, FB, Instgram etc. are very much global and immediate. That means anyone, anywhere, can say pretty much anything to anybody (despite the claimed restrictions)

It's both healthy and unhealthy. I've made contact with friends I hadn't seen for years and, as I said above, that's not always been a good thing!

I wonder how I would have been at 16 with access to something like FB. I have a dreadful feeling that I'd be exactly the same as people are today.

Thanks for the listen and comments.

Cheers

Right and Wrong
Interesting story line and catchy tune. I identify with your late 60's early 70's references and how people have changed. It seems the main ones still on FB are the Boomers. Have"friends" and family like you describe.

I'm pleased you got the references!

Us old gits eh?

"Friends" have a different sort of meaning these days. Perhaps I should have grown up :)

Thanks for the listen and comments

Or is that wrong?

Thanks Mike. It was fun to work on but there was so much going on it was bugger to mix.

love the instrumentation. is that banjo clucking in my right ear at the start of the song? love the pipe/recorder? also. lots of interest. you can really play.
also very clever lyrics, great all around performance of a really good song.
you are right!

Not a banjo

It's a heavily damped guitar. I originally wanted it to sound like pizzicato strings (a la Buddy Holly) but it didn't quite work out that way.

Celtic Tin Whistle (according to Logic).

Paul Simon said, in an interview I saw a few years ago, that he tries to make every verse different. That might be slightly different vocal phrasing or rhyming scheme or instrumentation and I try to work with that idea. In this song it was mainly how many guitars and what they were doing!

Thanks for the listen and the kind words.

Social Commentary
Right and wrong, what a novel idea.
Production values recall the Kinks to my ears, which is always a good thing. The climb during the regurgitation sequence worked wonderfully.
The music hall tradition shines through.

Thanks Daug
I've always been admirer of Ray Davies and I think The Kinks were never really given the credit they deserved. It wasn't a conscious move but as long as it works then that's good.

Ha! The regurgitation sequence! I like it :)

Music hall suits me. Not to be taken too seriously......

Great fun
And accurate too. I like the animal analogies. I can hear Grateful Dead (Touch of Grey) and Kinks in the playing and production. Some backing vocals would be nice. (More mixing woes for Dick, however!)

Backing vocals?
Mixing woes indeed!

There was so much already going ....

The animal ideas were Mark's. I wanted to argue about arguing but I saw sense.

The Dead and the Kinks get a mention again. I have no idea how that happened ;)

I loved this,...
Definitely, some intelligent talking points are needed in today's world where the admirable qualities of critical thinking, and intelligence are looked down upon. If we are going to get anywhere as a species, we have to use our brain, and to do that, we have to encourage its cultivation.

It's the intelligence that's often missing unfortunately
Totally agree. It's a pity that many people don't want to see any further than the latest fad ...

And this is why I've never used Twitter, nor Facebook
(“Gasp, say it isn’t so!”) ... and yet it is true, and I do not miss it.

There comes a point in all of our lives after which the various people that we have encountered up until that time ... really do not continue to be people that we need to encounter again.   (Just let bygones be bygones...) But social media – LinkedIn™, etcetera – somehow does not see it that way.

Oh well ... I leave them to it.

I do see a lot of this but I've
met a lot of good people and even found some good collaborators from those places. It's just a tool like anyplace else. I've even seen some of that shit here on MJ. Good commentary, and good melding of voices here!

It's a tool to some and a way of life for others. I saw a news item earlier about a reality TV show where one of the participants was celebrating her enhanced social media presence.

Shed style
This would fit in really nicely with some of the songs we're writing in the PBGB Shed these days Dick. Also hearing bits of The Kinks (and a slight tinge of The Sex Pistols).
Appropriate words in these days of "media" saturation and the perils of meeting up with your past. After our election yesterday, and a further 3 years of almost trumpian government, I expect even more blasts from the past will come out of the woodwork.
Cheers from Oz,

A bit of shock that election
I think the world is more than a little crazy at the moment.

I wasn't aiming for a Kinks sound but Ray Davies is one of my favourite songwriters so maybe something else was guiding me.

I bet that shed can be a brilliant place to work.

Thanks for the listen and comments Neil.

great fresh sound, absolutely spot on mix for the track. Relevant lyrics with a good poke in the song, sorry it took me so long before I saw this. I don't get the Cpt Beefheart reference. Loving the little extra ad libs in the background though. I love the guitar at 4:10, beautiful sound. Awesome track, I really enjoyed listening to this :)

Lovely comments, very much appreciated.

Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart was an album released in 1969 and was one of the most challenging pieces of music you are likely to hear. It appealed to us hippies at the time. The guy I'm taking about in the song would probably deny he ever listened to it. People change.

Even now it stands alone as one of the few albums that it is impossible to date by the music. If you want to be challenged here it is on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zdLfPN6F-o

It was NOT improvised. That is what Beefheart wanted it to sound like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trout_Mask_Replica

I saw the original band a few years ago (without the Captain) and they played the songs note perfect. Get your head around that.

Thanks again!

Cheers

Dick
